Engineering staff, electric
power plants in Egypt are
every bit as modern as
their counterparts in this
country. But, she continues,
in one respect the
Egyptian utilities are a
step ahead - they have
large humBers' of lady
engineers on their staffs.
Ms Ismai^ who was born
in Cairo in 1947 and lived
there until a year ago, says
she always took it for
granted that she would
have a career in a
profession, just as her
mother had (she's a high
school principal), just as
her younger sister will
(she's studying for a
degree in business administration),
and just as
most of her female
acquaintances are doing.
She explains that the
Egyptian Government
encourages women to have
careers by making college
available at low cost to all
comers and employing
graduates without regard
to sex. (In fact, working
for the government is often
mandatory for a period.)
An electrica1 engineering
graduate of the University
of Cairo, Ms Ismail «
became interested in
m a t h e m a t i c s and
technical subjects as a
teenager through her
father, an aeronautical
engineer. At the same time
she also became interested
in a young man - now a
civil engineer - whom she
married in 1971.
Shortly after the Ismails
married - and after both
had worked for the
Government - they moved
to the United States. They
involuntarily saw most of
Texas when Mr. Ismail
was drafted in the Army
and assigned to an U.S.
Army, base there. Now that
he is a U.S. citizen - and
Ms IsmalFwiirBecoIuelSfie
shortly - they have
decided to remain here
indefinitely and have
settled in Bethpage.
Ms Ismail, who is
fluent in Pnjglish, French
and Arab applied for a job
at LILCO last February.
The utility had an opening
for an experienced electrical
engineer and was
delighted to add another
woman to their
professional staff. Her
husband had to go farther
afield to continue his
career - he works for a
utility in Newark, New
Jersey.
Ms Ismail does not intend
to sit idle while she;
waits for her husband to
arrive home some two
hours after her. Instead,

of the sports she excels in
such as swimming - she
„ used to compete in 100
meter freestyle events -
tennis and table tennis.
Sports seem to be the only
.area where the couple's
interests diverge - he is a
former college champion
weight lifter and she
doesn't think she'll join
him in this activity.
