Eagle Scout Honored Ucal Students Win Grumman Scholarships

On May 4, 1973 at the Astro Motor Restaurant, Bethpage, New
York, a dinner was held to honor Christopher Wolin who has
achieved the rani: of Eagle Scout.
The Eagle Badge indicates that diligent service has been given by
the scout to the cause of Scouting and to the community. A young
man who receives this honor has worked hard for it and well merits
the distinction.
The following is a list of additional awards and citations which
were also presented to Christopher Wolin in recognition of his outstanding
achievement: the Eagle award presented by Edwin
Fehrenbach, a citation from President Richard M. Nixon, Vice
President Spiro T. Agnew, Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller, Senator
Jacob K. Javits, Senator James L. Buckley, Nassau County
Executive Ralph Caso, Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor John Burke,
Congressman Angelo Roncallo and Assemblyman Stuart Levine. •
Scout Wolin also received special awards from the American Legion,
the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Kiwanis Club and the Bethpage
Rotary Club.
Executive On Dowling Committee
1,000 leaders from society,
business, the professions and
government who are expected to
attend the $100 a-plate gala
dinner on Tuesday, May 15, 1973
at Colonie Hill, Hauppauge, New
York.
Fromm has contributed
greatly to the College both as a
Trustee and as Chairman of the
Joint Board Planning Committee.
Under Fromm's
leadership, the Committee has
successfully planned the
College's construction program
and conducted two all-day
general planning conferences,
the most recent this past March.
He was instrumental in obtaining
the donation of a Laser Interferometer
valued at $10,000, to
Dowling's Science Program.
Effective July 15, 1973, Win
Fromm will become President of
Airborne Instruments
Laboratory. Among his many
civic activities he has served as a
Trustee of the United Fund, a
member of the Visiting Committee
of the College of
Engineering at Drexel University,
and Dep ity Mayor of Lloyd
Harbor.

award, one of ten granted annually
by Grumman Corporation,
will provide the Seaford High
School senior and honor student
with payment of full tuition and
laboratory fees for four years at
any accredited engineering
college of bis choice. Atlas has
decided to enter M.I.T. to study
electrical engineering.
A strong electrical engineering
talent, Atlas has built Heath-kit
radio controls for some ten of his
model airplanes, and he has also
built a model Wankel airplane
engine. He is co-editor of his
school's newspaper, captain of
his math team and plays varsity
tennis. Photography is another of
his talents. With all this busy
schedule, Atlas has managed to
work time as a sorter and
packer at a clothing manufacturer's
plant. And he also has
tutored some of his classmates
with their studies.
William J. Mazzei, Jr., son of
Mr. and Mrs. William J. Mazzei
of 22 Salem Road, Hicksville, has
won a 1973 Grumman
Engineering Scholarship. The
award, one of ten granted annually
by Grumman Corporation,
will provide the Hicksville'High
School senior and honor student
with payment of full tuition for
four years., including, laboratory
fees, at any accredited

Mazzei. will enter M.I.T. in the
' f a l l to' study mechanical
engineering.
With today's emphasis on
eliminating pollution, clean
power intrigues young Mazzei,
and he has already worked with
solar cells. Making car models
down to the fine details of including
brake and gas models
also claims his attention. A well
rounded young man, Mazzei is
active in weight lifting and
karate. And his activities also
includeemploymentas a bus boy,
special student work fighting the
drug problem, Hicksville High
representative in Albany as
students 'ran' the government for
a day, and a National Science
Foundation award to attend a
course at a college in Potsdam,
N.Y. Tactful and humorous, he's
popular and a good leader.
Gary L. Waag, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Bernard H. Waag of 43
Satellite. Lane, Levittown, has
won a 1973 Grumman
Engineering Scholarship. The
award, one of ten granted -
annually by Grumman Corporation,
will provide the Island

19 Romscho Street, Bethpage, is
a member of the Banquet
Committee for the 1973 Dowling
College Distinguished Citizen
' Award Banquet honoring Win-field
E. Fromm. Dr. Baulknight
is a Research Scientist at
Grumman.. Aerospace Corporation,,
and is listed in Leaders
of Science and American Men of
Science.

Dominick F. Gagliardo,
a six-year member of the
Plainedge School Board
has announced his candidacy
for a third term as
trustee.
Gagliardo, who served
as the Board's Vice
President from 1969-1970
and its President from
1970-1971, stated that if
elected he would try to
bring more communication
and honesty to
the Board.
"Most of the current
Board members," said
Gagliardo, "ran on the
premise of greater
communication. Yet there
seems to be less and less of
it each year."
"I think this is a big
problem," continued
Gagliardo in a telephone
interview with the BETH-full
tuition and laboratory fees
for foox years at any accredited
engineering college of 'his choice.
Waag plans to enroU at Renn-selaer
Polytechnic Institute at
Troy, N. Y., to study cbmpliter
science.
Ranked third in his class of 420
members, he has had a well-rounded
high school career. In
addition to being an honor society
member with a keen interest in
mathematics and science, he has
been a member of the soccer
team, varsity club, band, or-~
chestra and jazz workshop.
Grumman has been awarding
Engineering Scholarships since
1944. Including the 1973 awards,
some 309 grants have been given
over the thirty year period. Of the
ten annual scholarships, up to
seven are open to competition
among eligible high school
seniors of Nassau and Suffolk
Counties; dependents of
Grumman employees compete
for the balance. Waag is in the
latter group, as his father works
for Grumman Aerospace as a
draftsman.
The student may choose to
specialize in either aeronautical,
mechanical, civil or electrical
engineering, provided the primary
interest is a long-term
career in engineering or supporting
field in the aerospace
effort.
PAGE TRIBUNE. "Just
recently, in fact, I had to
make the public motion
that the Board hold an
open discussion on the
budget before its adoption
on May 10th. None had
been scheduled."
Gagliardo, a 22-year
resident of Plainedge, also
recently disclosed some of
the details behind the
School Board's refusal- to
extend the contract of its
present Superintendent,
Dr. John Rinehart.
