Plainedge School
District's advertisement
?6r ~ a new school
superintendent, said Dr.
Philip Pitruzzello of New
York University.
Speaking at a special
public meeting of the
Plainedge School Board
held May 24th, Dr.
Pitruzzello said that most
of the responses were in
the form of formal applications.
Dr. Pitruzzello, Head of
the
El.'cVi*-«>!
ministration of the _.
of Education, New York
University, and Dr.
Williard S. Elsbree of
Teachers College,
Columbia University had
been invited by the board
to discuss their screening
procedures with the
district.
The Pitruzzello-Elsbree
team is a professional
screening committee
which the board recently
commissioned to perform
a "nation-wide" search for
"the best qualified and
most highly recom-mendable
candidates" for
the Superintendent's
position.
Dr. Pitruzzello said that
in addition to presenting
their procedures to the
community, both he and
Dr. Elsbree also wished to
receive input from the
community.
"It is our hope," said
Pitruzzello, "that we know
as much as we possibly
can about Plainedge."
In response to a
question, Pitruzzello said
that the committee had
been instructed to look for
a person of "unusual and
exceptional background..
. a person of integrity and
a high degree of intelligence
. v- (one skil|edb
in enriching curriculum.. *
. (and one able to) communicate
effectively with
the staff, community and
students."
"It is my impKsssiou,,"
added Pitruzzello, .'that
(the board) certainly
wants a good administrator...
(The board)
is looking for leadership...
They're not overly
concerned wittt j high
technical: skills in the
business area."
In response to another
question, Dr. Pitruzzello
stated that "we're a
screening, team, not a
selection team. The board
of education is the
selection team."
Many community
members were quick and
ready to provide the
community input the
committee was seeking.
d e ^ o f it
Harold Ewen, President
Federation of Teachers,
addressing Drs. Pitruzzello
and Elsbree, said
that the Plainedge School
Board * had exhibited
"gross disdain for the
teachers and public."
"Your committee is a
screen," said Ewen, "for
what is actually going on
in the district....The board
has already made up its
mind and is using the
committee to make it all
sound judicious.... You
were called in to dignify
the situation."
Dr. Elsbree replied that
he felt the board was
acting in good faith.
Mrs. Esther Kamlet
reprimanded Mr. Ewen
and other speakers by
saying that "we shouldn't
iiiiuiuiutuiiinuiiiuiiiiuiuuuituuiiiiiiiiuiiiuiiiiii
be airing our dirty linen in
public before these gentlemen."
Before the two-hour
meeting was over a great
many members of the 85-
member audience rose to
address the committee
and express their feelings,
attitudes and recommendations
concerning
the Plainedge community.
In response to numerous
questions from the
audience, Dr. Pitruzzello
reiterated the timetable
the committee would
utilize.
The committee has
established. June 8ti» a s u»e
d e a d l i n e for filing ap-j^
pm-would
be delivered to the
board approximately
three weeks after that
date. At that time the
board would begin
arranging interviews with
the "six or ; seven"
recommended candidates.
If this schedule is
adhered to by the school
board, its decision should
be made well after July
1st.
The audience greeted
that announcement with a
collective sigh of relief. It
means that a "new board"
will choose the district's
new superintendent, as the
terms of current board
members Bahnken,
Gagliardo, and Walsh all
expire on July 1st.
