WHEREAS: St. Martin of Tours, R.C. and St. Paul's Lutheran Church
of Bethpage are both celebrating their 50th anniversary, having been ,
established in 1923; and
WHEREAS: this year also marks the 25th anniversary of Israel's re-birth
as an independent nation, which is now engaged in a struggle for
freedom for its 3,115,000, citizens; and
WHEREAS: we all share the heartache and sadness of the Jewish community
in Bethpage and of Jews everywhere for the war which erupted
in the midst of their high holy days; and
WHEREAS: the community of Bethpage, with its representatives of
many religious faiths, demonstrates the true spirit of brotherhood land
ecumenism as three of the faiths celebrate major landmarks in then-history,
NOW, THEREFORE, I, John W. Burke, Supervisor of the Town of
Oyster Bay, on behalf of the Town Board, do hereby join with the
residents of Bethpage in the gold and silver anniversaries now being
observed by our Jewish and Christian brothers and ask that residents
throughout the Town of Oyster Bay take a lesson from Bethpage
whose people live in harmony with their brothers, regardless of
religious persuasion, and allow them to go about their daily lives
free from harassment and fear. on
