Student Council members encouraged the new Bethpage High School freshmen
to participate in school activities.
Incoming JFK Middle School sixth grade students and Bethpage High
School freshmen attended orientations in late August to familiarize them with
their new schools prior to the first day of classes. Each orientation covered
school district policies and procedures, as well as tips for navigating the build-ings,
to help students begin the school year confident, comfortable, and pre-pared.
The sixth graders received JFK Middle School folders containing materials
about the school. Advisors and other staff members led presentations that fur-ther
explained this infonnation, and offered Q&A opportunities before the ori-entations
ended.
The ninth grade orientation was facilitated by Bethpage High School admin-istrators,
and also featured senior class members who provided advice from stu-dents'
perspectives. The seniors encouraged their younger peers to get involved
in school activities such as the Century Learning Program, athletics,
Student Civic, Student Council, and more. Photos: Karina Stabile, Syntax
Summer Orientation Programs at
Plainedge Schools
Looking to help provide students with a smooth transition from sum-mer
vacation to the start of school in their new school buildings, Plainedge
High School and Middle School coordinated summer orientation programs at
their facilities for the district's ninth and sixth-grade students, respectively.
With a mix of emotions, the incoming sixth-grade class gathered
together with their parents in the school's auditorium to listen to welcoming
remarks from Principal Anthony DeRiso and Assistant Principal Jennifer
Wiesman. Working to ease any fears the students had about coming to the
middle school, the administrators reassured the audience members that their
office doors are always open and that they would be there to help.
Additionally, Police Officer Dockswell was on hand to deliver a comprehen-sive
presentation on Internet safety and cyber-bullying, focusing on how the
students should protect themselves while navigating through cyberspace. At
the end of the program, the students and their parents embarked on self-guid-ed
walking tours of the building and practiced opening their assigned school
lockers.
After a welcome address and brief introductions by Principal Robert
Amster, Plainedge High School's ninth-grade class participated in a diversity
awareness/tolerance workshop facilitated by Plainedge alumnus, motivational
speaker, and retired police officer Paul Failla. Officer Failla focused on mak-ing
good decisions and helped to set a positive tone for the school year.
Plainedge Middle School students were eager to try and open their lockers
during the building s sixth-grade orientation program held at the end of their
summer vacation.
Just before the start of school, Plainedge High School's incoming ninth-grade
class gathered together for a summer orientation program. Several students
are pictured here with their assigned upper-class peer counselor, who coordi-nated
tours of the school Photos provided by Jennifer Kuefner, Syntax.
