Astronomy Night Goes
Above and Beyond at BHS
Students in the Bethpage School District enjoyed yet another
exciting Astronomy Night, a fall tradition held at the high school
each year. Faculty members as well as middle and high school
Astronomy Club volunteers led an evening filled with activities
that were enjoyed by Central Boulevard, Charles Campagne, and
Kramer Lane elementary school children.
As in years past, one highlight of Astronomy Club was the
"Stamival" in the building's gymnasium that was comprised of
games created and organized by students. Beanbag and ring toss
challenges, hula-hoop contests, hockey games, and much more
were based on themes from outer space in spirit of the event. Other
activities included a scavenger hunt, stargazing, "Find Your Place
in Space Bingo," "constellation comer" and "star finder" work-shops,
and a "Starry Night" presentation.
For the first time. Astronomy Night also featured a show in the
school's Performing Arts Center. Students wrote, directed, and
starred in Pluto the Musical, which was a great success in entertain-ing
students, staff, and parents in the audience. The musical told a
story about Pluto becoming leader of the Dwarf Planets and meet-ing
planets and asteroids along its journey aAer a meeting with
Halley's Comet. The Pollaris Z "pit band" provided music, and the
stage crew, sound, and lighting did an excellent job in creating the
perfect settings.
