Bar Assodation Plans
Law Osi Programs
Law '^ay is Friday, May 1 and in Nassau County daylong pro-gratm
have been scheduled, according to William J. Deeley. Jr.,
president ol the Bar Association of Nassau County.
Law Day Chairman for the Bar Assooiation is Harold A. Mahony.
He said that Law Day USA is celebrated annually on the first day
of May as an educational-patriotic
observance established by
Congress and by official proclamation
of the President of the
United States. The theme for Law
Day USA 1970 is: Law - Bridge
to Justice. It emphasizes that the
law is in fact a bridge for reaching
social goals and resolving
grievances that lalise divisions in
American sociel^. It stresses also
that achieving justice is U»e objective
of our legal system and
that its utilization is the key to
promoting unity o! purpose in our
national life.
Mr. Mahony said that the objectives
of Law Day USA are to
foster respect for law and understanding
of its essential place
in American life; to encourage
citizen support of law observance
and law enfortiment; to advance
equality and jUfitSce under law
and to point up the contrast between
freedom under law in the
United States and governmental
tyranny under communism.
With the assistance and cooperation
of Supreme Court Justice
Frank Gulotta, administrative
judge of Nassau Ckiunty,
special programs wlE be held- in
the county. Justice. Gulotta.. has
provided judges as guest speakers.
Mr. Mahony said that the
Bar Association has supplied
reading material and posters to
the high schools with the help of
the police department.
Board Repeals
Local Law I,
No Salary Irtcreases
The Freeport Village Board,
meeting in executive session on
Monday, April 27, repealed Local
Law No. 1 of 1970, which doubled
their salaries. Although there was
discussing on passing a new law
with lesser increases, no action
was taken.
No salary increases were paid
between the time the law was
passed and the present, because
of a petition containing 2200
names which was presented to
the Board in February, calling for
a referendum on the increase.
Court action on the petition
culminated just one week ago
with a decision by Supreme Court
Justice Paul Widlitz that the
petition was valid and that the
referendum could take place in
November at the time of the
general elections.
No appeal of the decision was
possible because Village Representatives
conceded before Judge
Widlitz that the signatures on the
petition were valid.
