Sdioof budget Vote
For Jiine 16
Agreeraent-by teachers and the Board of Education of the 1970-71
salaiy proposal all'but completes final work on" the school budget.
The only salary figures yet to be finalized are those of the admta-istrative
staff* Voter approval will be sought on Tuesday, June 16th.
"I think Sjchool district voters will be interested to know toat
bCidget has the unanimous
support of all five Board members.
The principles of fiscal responsibility
have been carefully
considered in al phases of its development.
It is difficult to prepare
a budget which meets the
educational needs of all children
and at the same time keep bur
expenditures at realistic levds.
The Board, by its unanimous &pf
proval, feels this budget has accomplished
that end," '
' These comments wore made by
Board" Prraident Joseph M. Mc-
Andrews in discussing the forthcoming
budget vote on Juiieieth.
Inclusion of the '7p-'7I teachers'
salary figures with the abreiady
stated figure of $i|,480,8M makes
the budget total $11,874,844:- -,
•Ebis inflects a taS: rate of
^.«S7 per 1100 of assessed valuation—
an increase of approximately
$.65.
Mr. McAndrews again emphasized
ttiat^the Freeport Board,
like hu^jfreds of hundreds of
others^ New York State, has
repeatedly expressed opposition
to continuance of real estate as
the principal tax base for our
schools. "Between that and inflation."
he continued, "we almost
start out with strikes against us.
However, we have worked long
and hard on this budget, and we
believe it reflects the fiscal responsibility
I mentioned earlier."
Voting will teke place at all
designed polling places on Tues-^
day, June 1* from 7 a.m. to 9
pjp.
Parking lota accommodating 15
buses and 225 cars plus interconnecting
roads will serve both
facilities.
The Department of Public
Works estimates the cost at $2,-
116,820 and expects to begin work
in late summer with conqiletion
by late 1971.
Plans for construction of the
museum building are expected to
be ready for Board consideration
by July.
"We have filled only 80 of the
176 acres of this wetlands area,"
Nickerson stated. "The remainder
is being left in a natural stete
for study and observation."

The Board of Education reluctantly
concludes that for too
long a time thfr schoote have tiem
attempting to solve pfoblema by
themselves—problems common to
the entire Village of, fbe^wft.
We have repeatedly emi^iBsized
the importance at parental attitudes
and home environment-
White ad weU'as black. # e reiterate
this fundamental belief.
Recent events and existing
cumstaiices make this Board
aware,that only with positive cooperative
ac«on from Village gov«
errimeni along with strong parental
guidance will we be able to
begin to combat effectively the
<iisastrous polarization which obviously
how grips us.
The foUowlng Is an excerpt
from M letter sent to
Mayor, Robert J. Sweeney June
4, 1970, requestiM an urgent Jol&t
meeting of the Village Board of
Trustees, the Human Rights Com-misston,
and the Board of Education:
"While the school year is all
but coinpleted, the problems
brought to light in the past week
remain. They will grow daring
the summifr and into the next
school year If positive action Is
not taken."
As a Board of Education we
always remember the primny
role of BchoolM-^to educate. But
how are we to ftilfUl this role unless
every segment of the fret-port
community actively assunMM
its share of social responsibiUtyf
The Board wants to make it
