CHAMBER o r COMflERCC MAKES PARK/NG STUDY FOR FREEPORT
Freeport's Chamber of Commerce, with Mayor
Robert J. Sweeney and the Village Board, is making
a parking feasability study for Freeport's central
shopping district, A committee, formed and chaired
by Walter Green of Carol Green,
Is worklng.wldi a firm of planning
engineers. Conrad Associates,
retained by the Village Board, to
determine how the parking needs
of our business district ml^t
best be met. Conrad Associates
have worked successfully in the
past with the Village of Hempstead
and other areas.
Freeport's recent successful
Dollar Savings Days pointed up
the serious need for more parking
for the business area. Parking
lots are already located centrally
within flie shopping area,
but they are no longer able to
accommodate the cars coming
into Freepon for shopping or
services. The study being made
by the Chamber committee and
Conrad Associates will recommend
four sites for possible construction
of multi-level parking.
Physical design and traffic flow
alternates will be studied for two
sites considered most favorable.
The study will encompass estimated
costs for construction, income
and operating cost projections,
financial feasability, and
recommendations for further
action.
The Chamber of Commerce
feels that with the Urban Renewal
Project under way east of the
central business district, well-planned
and well-designed parking
win add to the improving
climate in the Village of Free-port.
Freeport's Chamber is always
interested in the general
welfare of all the people and their
mutual problems. Itholds a weekly
luncheon meeting open to all,
members or not, at which community
problems are thoroughly
aired through guest speakers,
question and answer sessions,
and general open discussions.
Since this organization represents
a wide cross-section of
Freeport's business, industrial,
professional, and residential
population, its interests cover
all topics relating to Improving
Freeporti
planned for citizens to
needed to conaTbat ^

program at about 3:00 p.m. with

legislation in Congress; programs
under which profits derived
from operating plants without
air pollution controls would
be used for the purchase of antipollution
devices; and constructive
means for citizens to combat
poor sewage, jet noise, and other
ever-increasing dangers to our
environment."
