Since iires are accidents and accidents
are largely preventable,
many of these lives would have
been saved by following a few
simple rules: (1) Don't smoke
in bed; (2) Keep matches and
cigarette lighters away from
children; (3) Check closets and
other places where flammables
may be stored and get rid of
them; (4) Keep a fire extinguisher
handy, preferably in or near
the kitchen; (5) Examine all electric
cords, connectors and receptacles
for frayed wires and
broken parts and replace or repair
those that are fauky; (6)
Check all doors and exits to make
sure they are not blocked or
locked.
Child Drowns
One half hour after her grandmother
had reported her missing
to the police, three year old
Sharon Dels of Brentwood was
found drowned in Glover's Canal,
Freeport.
Sharon left the home of her
grandparents, Theodore and
Mary Ann Chrlstlahsen of 49
Stirling Street to "wait for the
Ice cream man" at about 6:30
P.M. Mrs. Christiansen called
police a short time later. Sharon
was found shortly after 1:00 P.M.
and had apparently waiKlered to
the rear of the property where
there is no fence separating the
end of the prqierty andthecanaL
STOLEN CAR
ALERT VIA WGBB
The Freeport Police Department in cooperation with
Radio Station WGBB has started a new program in the
detection of stolen aiitos from Freeport.
The program, an adjunct of the already successful
" 4 0 , 0 0 0 Pairs of Eyes" is designed lo encourage civilians
to assist the Freeport Ptjiice in deteaUo'i and recovery
of stolen cars and also to deter aulo theft in the Village.

a vital community service, including counseling and financial assistance
to advanced cancer patients and their families, and
WHEREAS, Freeport Cancer Care serves families of moderate income
within a fifty mile radius of New York City, and
WHEREAS, all contributions to Cancer Care are used solely lor
family grants, and
WHEREAS, this non-sectarian organization assists all on the basis
of need and wthout regard to race, color or creed, and
WHEREAS, membership in Cancer Care is open to all interested
persons,

VOLUNTEERS
Volunteers are urgently needed
to work in the office of the American
Cancer Society, N a s s au
Division it was announced today
by Mrs. Harry Weintraub of
Rockvllle Centre, Chairman of
Volunteer Activities.
Mrs. Weintraub said she would
like volunteers who are able to
give several hours each week
at Division Headquarters located
at 1551 Kellum Place inMineola.
Tlie Division can use volunteers
to do clerical work -
typing and filing etc.. In connection
with the many facets of
its year-round cancer control
program.
Volunteers are urged to call

BOCES to Locale
in Baldwin
The Hempstead Town Board
today took the first formal step
in Its plan to lease 16 acres of
land to the Nassau Board of Cooperative
Services (BOCES) for
the construction of a school for
handicapped children.
The board, with Councilman
Leo McGlnity casting the lone
dissenting vote, approved a resolution
•'authorizing and directing"
Presiding Supervisor Ralph
G, Caso to sign a lease with
BOCES for the parcel, located In
the Baldwin Park.
The land will be leased to
BOCES on a flve^ear basis with
four optional five-year terms.
The site wlU be used for the
construction of a school to house
800 children now attending the
iminediaiely. It is to be em-ptiasi/.

GRASS ROOTS AWARD-GOVERNOR ROCKEFELLER SMILES:
Martin E. Weiss, president of the Nassau County Press Association,
displays exultant pride as he presents his association's "Grass Roots"
award to Governor Rockefeller during the N.C.P.A.'s annual dinner
at the Garden City Hotel. The Governor was being honored by the
association of Nassau weekly newspapers for his "unusual sensitivity
to the weekly prea and to the needs of Nassau County."
