rvance Memorial Day is a time of sadness and a time of hone
in which America - a nation of 240,000,000 strong ~
rcKiedicates itself to the glories of the past and the
promise of the future. Fevif families in our country today
have not been to~uched"at one time or another by war
and death. The last war is always the war to end all wars
There was World War I. World War H fought on a global
scale dwarfed anything history had ever recorded. Korea
was a matter of honor, peace in the pacific, and a wall
against the spread of communism. Now we have the
tragedy of, Vietnam in which many American lives have
been sacrificed. And again the worn rhetoric. that this
will be,the last war. We are further reminded of the chs^ns
that bind us,to the past with the, recent defeat'of,the
Mansfield ammendment to recall our, troops froni Europe.
AUvthis is what we want to believe and none can be
faulted for (bhen'shing sucfi a belief, Life wiihout hope
is a waste of spirit and thin^ of the spirit, beauty, gtace,
wisdom, tolerance and understanding. Principles of faith,
somehow have fallen into disuse and disrepair. But must
we store theni in the attic like worn furniture, an old baby
crib or yesteryear's faded photographs when life seemed
simpler like a nickle cone of Ice cream?
Still life goes on and we plod on with our burdens of
the spirit and of the flesh not to mention taxes, violence
and disorders among the young whom we hope some day
will be our leaders.
Someone once remarked the past is prologue Co (he
future. Some of us may take this with a grain of bitters
and hope not. But if this means that we should try lo
shape our future with the hard lessons of the past, then
let us hope and pray that this will come to be: day.s of
wisdom and days of peacfe.
Let us therefore on Memorial Day shape our silent
tears for those we loved and lost into banners of hope
and faith for better days to come and come they will.
The American spirit has been tried in countless ways and
countless wars and it has not been found wanting in
strength or courage to pursue truth and to pursue peace.
And while we honor those who are no longer with us
except in mind and memory, let us also observe a few
cautions in our driving habits over this holiday period. The
State Traffic Safety Council and its President Charles
F. Luce join The Leader in observing the solemn soaring of
spirit on Memorial Day as well as expressing a word of
warning to observe road rules and to urge all to drive
defensively.
