Pride, the cx>mmunity orgajiization sponsored
by the Freeport CitizeDs Committee on Drug
Abuse, recently received from the Nassau County
Drug Abuse Commission $6659.00. This amount
represents the first payment,
consented to serve as chairman
of the fund raising committee of
Operation PRIDE. Mr. Malone
stated:

which is 1/12 of the total grant.
The money will be used for a
program of prevention of drug
abusp through education. Pride
will provide counseling and rap
sessions for individuals and
groups, hot-line telephone service
for crisis intervention and in­formation
Pride will also
provide rehabilitation serviires -
vtxrational and educational. The
programs will serve the needs of
the adult community as well as
the youth of Freeport.
If the grant is to bp continued
on a monthly basis, it is
necessary thai an additional
$80,000 be raised within the
community through con­tributions
of money or in-kind
.services. A generous contribution
of $1000 has already been
received from Doctors Hospital.
Dr. Anton Notey has contributed
$1000.00. Other private citizens
and organizations have t}^un to
respond to this urgent need.

Nets to Invade Freeport
Some Freeport living rooms will become classrooms next
Tall because of a $3000,000 federal grant to (he Nassau
Board of Cooperative Educational Services.
As part of a national pilot program to develop new
approaches to early childhood education, the grant will
serve to establish pre-school classes in the living rooms of
Freeport, Long Beach, Hempstead. Glen Cove, Westbury
and Roosevelt.
Jack Taxman, the acting director of research for the
NBCES, which will administer the federal grant, said yes­terday
that the living room schools will be flexible. The
rooms will be rented from homeowners who will serve as
teacher aides during the daytime pre-school programs.
Teachers, paid by the local school districts, will supervise
the children, and parents in the neighborhood may also
serve as teacher aides.
"Our office will train the parents and teachers and write
the instructional manuals," Tanzman said. He said that
the programs were not designed primarily for day care,
although some working parents may be able to use them
for that purpose. "Our intent is completely instructional,"
Tanzman said. "We want to see what kind of positive in­fluence
such a program can have in a low-income setting
in preparing the children for schooUng." Each center will
serve about 20 2-and 3-year-olds.
.Several weeks ago a controversial day care center in
Garden City was scrapped by the County Board of Super­visors.
At that time, the Board said it was considering and
exploring the use of "family centers," where mothers
could take care of the children of welfare mothers while
caring for their own. Hie county has already hired some
licensed women to provide similar child care.

on Sunrise Highway at the Meadowlvook Pkwy. entrance
to Joii^ Beach. Nearby, a state trooper vras stationed be­cause

they attempted to make deliveries to the beadi.
