Village Cracks Down
on Umighdy Nuisarwe

Hundreds of visitors came to the Nautical Mile over the weekend to join in the festivities and to
look at the finest in boats and boating supplies, and to drool over the 58' Chris Craft valued at $500,000.
$500 Fine in Gas Station Violations
Freeport Village Jastice Edwin J. Freedman handed
out maximum fines Tliursday of $250 on each of two
summonses issued lo a North Main Street service station,
for maintaining an unsightly nuisance. The station, at
North Main and Davis Streets, has kept hundreds of junk
tires strewn about the premises and in an adjacent lot.
Judge Freedman imposed the $500 in fines on the lessee
of the Sunoco station, James Smith of 479 N.'Main Street,
Freeport, N.Y. Nine more summonses against the same
station have been served by the Freeport Code Enforcement
Department, and those are scheduled for trial on
September 2nd in the Village Court. Mayor Robert J.
Sweeney ordered his inspectors to issue a summons each
•^day that the violations continued.
At the opening of the sesaon Judge Freedman pointed
out to courtroom spectators that Freeport Jiome owners
are urging the court to levy maximum fines in Building
and Zoning Code cases, to put landlords on notice thai
the community will not tolerate any of the conditions
that contribute to neighborhood decline.
Another service station across the street al North Main
and Holloway Streets has also been receiving the attention
of The inspectors from Freeport and the Town of
Hempstead. Most of the station properly is in Roosevelt,
under Town jurisdiction.
Four summonses were recently served on James McCray
and a Mr. Bazerman, the owner. In Nassau Counly District
Court on July 16lh the judge ordered the properly cleaned
up within 45 days and directed Mr. Baxerman to appear
in court again at the end of that time.
Deputy Clerk Appointed

Clerk lo replace Tom DeVincenzo
who last week was appointed
Village Clerk.
Osborne, 50. a veteran of World
War U is married and was
graduated from Hunter College
in 1951 He attended Fordham
later to study Government
Contract Administration.
The new Deputy Clerk brings to
his new po:>ition work and subcontract
administration experience
from such firms as
(jfumman Aircraft, Reeves
Instrument Corp., Fairchild
Camera and Instrument Corp.,
and Servomechanisms Inc.
Effective 8/ 17/ 71 Osborne will
be acting in bis new capacity
directly responsible to Clerk
DeVincenzo and primarily in the
areas of personnel, insurance
artd general office administrative
duties for the Village.
Busy Week for Police
Thursday 8/ 12 Pll. Frank
Medagiia of the Village Police
responded to a housebreaking
and burglary alarm. On the spot
investigation resulted in the
apprehension of a juvenile.
Further investigation resulted in
the arrest Friday by Medagiia, of
Calvin Figgs, 18. of 231 Elizabeth
St., Oceanside, who admitted to a
dozen other larcenies and
burglaries along the waterfront.
Both were charged with 3rd
degree burglary, the under age
suspect arraigned In Juvenile
Court and Figgs in 1st District
Court, Mineola.
