New School Bus
Limits Protested
Several cili/en groups in Ihe Vilbgr are circulating
petitions t« be presented Wednesday evening 9/15 al Ihe
school board meeling lo the si'hool board pr<itesting
new school bus regulations wliich became elTecIive willi
Ihe opening of Ihe new school lerin.
At llie schcHil board meeting of May 19. 1971. the
board voted to iiurease. from a mile and a half to two
miles, Ihe distance from the high school a pupil must
live in t»rder tt) be bussetl. Ihis acticni was taken iK'cause
the Slate was reducing i l s Iransportalion financial aid
to the school districts hv rearranging it's aid iormuia.
A few weeks later, (iov. Rucketeller rescinded the lormida
rearrangement and (he I reepc.rl board was persuaded
lo add S3().00{) to Ihe Inidgel coming up for approval
by Ereeporl voters on Jime K in order lo go back tt> the
original mileage of 1 5 miles. This %v3s placed on Ihe
ballot as Transportation l*ri>p(»silion #,r Ihe proposition
was narrowly defeated by 7.? voles and Ihe bussing
distance o! 2 miles became effeclive wiili the o|H'ning
of this new lerni.
The {K'titions are being circulated it) either furce anulher
referendum or to have Ihe board voluntarily reduce the

units through the Village but they
were cheered by hundreds of
Freeporters along the route lo the
block party site at Atlantic and
Bay view There the festivities
continued with music, good food
and cold drinks
A deluge early Sunday morning

tournament and competitions at
Fireman's Field but the firemen
persevered. Ihe weather cleared,
and the large crowd of spectators
were treated lo a thrilling
exhibition of hose, ladder and
Ijucket handling. Oyster Bay #1
walked off with top honors of 17
points in the competitions, and
Oceanside had the best appearing
band in the parade. As host,
Freeport's baiid dM not compete.

Huntington Giants team. Freeport's own Chiefs walloped the Giants 24 to 14 at the stadium Sunday,
and remain undefeated in the Eastern Ffxitb^l Cooferenc».
Sunday, September 19th, the Chiefs will travel to Plainfield, New Jersey, and take on tfie Mew Jersey
Oaks who are considered to be a top ranking d u b in the league, along with the Qfiiels. The home schedule
will be resumed Sunday, S^jitember 26th at 1:30 PM at the Freeport Stadium a p n s l the Philadelphia
Giants, an affiliate of the NFL Philadelphia Eagles. All of the remaining games^ hooie or away, wBI be
briiadcast to this area by station WGBB.
Sunday the 26th will be dddren's day at the stadium, and all children who af* accompanied by
adults will be eligible for prizes which indude two bicydes.
