Joint Meeting
BEAUTIFICATIOI^: Admiring one of the new shrubs to be planted in a new beautification program are
Freeporfs Chamber of Commerce President Charles Mehrmann. left. Deputy Mayor William White, Village
Trustee Thomas Lovelidge, Chamber Beautification Chairman Mrs. William Gaylor, and Village
Trustee Lloyd Orr. The Village government and the Chamber of Commerce are engaged in this joint
venture to beautify the Railroad embankment area on the north side of Sunrise Highway. The first
section at Grove Street is being planted with shrubs and otherwise landscaped by Atlantic Nurseries to
create a park-like setting. Mrs. Gay lor said the Village and Chamtwr of Commerce will welcome participation
and contrilMJttons from all interested Freeport organizations to extend the beautification program to
other areas in the Village.

HEMPSTEAD TOWN'S FUTURi ENVIRONMENTAL RESOURCE
CENTER: Responding to the average yearly increase in handicapped
children of 3%. Hempstead Town Presiding Supervisor Fmnch T.
Purcell announced recently plans for a $B million Environmental
Resource Center for i u ANCHOR program. ANCHOR (Answering
the Needs of Children through Organized Recieation), will be
able to accommodate 750 handicapped youngsters by 1974.
Mother Charged in
Baby's Death
An 18-year-old Freeporl
mottier was arrested in a trailer
camp^ LaGrange, Illinois on a
charge that she beat her 4-month-old
daughter to death in
QANs^s Freeport, earlier this month.
Mrs. Linda LeBlanc, of 5 Elm
Ave.. Freeport, was arrested by
oustMo two Nassau County police
homicide detectives and
LaGrange police after an in
vestigation by the Nassau
authorities. Her daughter.
v£»xm Catherine, died SepL 9 in Doctors
Hospital, Freeport. When an
autopsy disclosed that the baby
died of a fractured skiiU, the
detectives, Leonapl Karwowski
and Gerald Hunter, began the
investigation that led to Mrs.
LeBlanc's arrest here.
Police said the fatal beating

Avenue address. After the

a planned agenda which includes:
1. Proposed joint effort of Village Board and School
Board in the appropriation of playing fields on
property commtmly known as "Fireman's Field".
Also included in this discussion, the possibility of
a joint effort to provide additional tennis court
facilities in the community.
2. Report from Human Rights Commission on progress
with regard to the employment of a Director,
establishment «)f an office, and the implementation
of services to the community.
3. Presentaticm by the School Board with regard to
pa'sent considerations of a Bond Issue for the
Dodd Jr. High.
4 Report from the Village Board on pr{»[)osed Recreation
Center and programs for the coming year.
5. Report on Status of plans for the establishment of
a Day Care Center on N. Main Street. Is implcmcn-tati<

Mayor Sweeney and the village board will attend. The
Honorable Charles C. Mchrmann, President of the Chamber
of Commerce, will head the group from that organization.
School Board President Harold Levine and other Board
members will represent the school district, and Human
Rights Commissioner Edward Yamin will report on the
progress of his organization.
Levy Requests Meeting on Freeport Clilorination
Senator Norman J Levy (R-I.
4)ng Beach) disclosed that he
had requested Dr. Hollis
Ingraham. Commissioner of the
New York Slate Department of
Health to meet with him, with
Mayor ftobert S,weeney and other
representatives of the Village of
Freeport prior to a determination
on Freeport's request thai it be
exempted from the Slate Public
Health Council's mandate that
municipally - owned water supply
systems be chlorinate.
Senator Levy said that a preliminary
meeting had been held
in Albany between Village
Trostee Uoyd Orr and Superintendent
of Freeport's Water
District, Ekiward Voelker and
Samuel Syrotynski, Oiief of the
Water Plant Operation Section,
Bureau of Public Water Supply,
New York Slate Health Department,
at the request of Mayor
Robert Sweeney to discuss the
situation.
Senator Levy said that the
Public Health Council had
promulgated an amendment to
the Stale Sanitation Code
requiring that minimum treatment
of drinking water be
disinfected by chlorination w
another method acceptable to the
State Commissioner of H ^ t h mi
or before January 1.1973. Senator
Levy said that he was asked by
Mayor Robert Sweeney to %t up
the meeting because, "Mayrar
Sweeney, the Board of Trustees
and Water Commissioners will
sedc an exception to the State
regulation." Mayor Sweeney
said. "Freeport has always beea
proud of its clean, pure, good
tasting water. Hie addition of
chlorine will change the taste <rf
our water and the Board ni
