i Sweep
In a much predicted Republican landslide, Nassau
County voters swept most Republican candidates and
incumbents into office in a day of voting eraluated by one
political observer as "heavy for an off year."
District Attorney William Cahn was reelected for another
3 years, and as of midnight Tuesday led 184,768 to
Wallace's 86,521.
Francis Purcell was also reelected Presiding Supervisor
for the Town of Hempstead for the next two years.
Alfonse M. D'Amato defeated George Israel (D) as Town
Supervisor, Nathan Bennett was reelected Hempstead Town
Clerk and Robert D. Livingston Jr. defeated Glenn Rosso
(D) for the po.st of Receiver of Taxes for the Town of
Hempstead.
Here in Freeport, the Village adhered to its traditional
support of Republican candidates by giving Purcell 5614
to Franco's 3569, D'Amato 5569 to Israel's 3307, Cahn
6631 to Wallace's 3203 and Bennett 5261 to McGuirks
AS THE LEADER goes to press ViBi final returns not
yet in, it appears that the City of Long Beach, long a
Democratic stronghold may have gone Republican in the
GOP landslide.
In something of a surprise, all propositions and amendments
were defeated, including the $2.5 biUion Transportation
Bond which had been strongly supported by Gov,
Rockefeller and Mayor Lindsay. Lindsay has warned
repeatedly that defeat of the Bond issue would result in an
increase in N.Y.C. subway fares.
