The Public Service Commission
has approved a temporary
increase in electric

Village of Freeport about
$328,000 additional annual

needs continue* The Village
of Freeport, which provides
electric service to 13,700
customers, had aslced for a
permanent increase totalling
$S 12,200 per year.
As a municipally-owned
public utility, the Village of
Freeport electric department
is not affected by a
recent Price Commission order
imposing a moratorium
on rate increases.
TTie Village generates a-bout
75 per cent of the
electricity it sells and buys
the remaining 2S per cent
from Long Island Lighting
Company.
Data submitted by the
VUlage at hearings on the
temporary rates indicated
that the electric department's
current annual net
operating .income is less
than the present yearly interest
charges on outstanding
electric bonds. As a result,
Mr. Block reported, the
electric department must
pursue an unsound flnancial
course by applying part of
the funds generated through
depreciation accruals to
meet interest diarges. He
said this coiuse dU oQt
**enable the ekotric d^pairfi-ment
to preserve, its utiUty
property,** so that a teoH"
porary increasewas justified.
