January 1st of this year by County Executive Ralph G. Cu*
Village
James R. Dunne, a professional Planner, has been appointed
Urban Renewal Director of the Village of Freeport.
Mayor Robert J. Sweeney announced today.
The local Urban Renewal office has been operated by
Deputy Director Harry Brewster, since the former director.
John Salvadore, left in July of last year.
"Jim Dunne brings excellent qualifications to this
position," Mayor Sweeney said, "including a background
of thirteen years involved with the full range of Federal
Programs administered by the Housing and Urban Development
Agency and the F.H.A."
Since May of 1970 Mr. Dunne has been Project Coordinator
and head of planning section for Gruen Associ-
|a^tes,-. I*laiiners, and Architects-of New York and Los
jAngctles. He has administered jliarg^.scate,t]^ri|ijn

|Tn-Niagara Falls; and for the Horizon Corporation of
Tucson, Arizona.
Prior to this, he was a Senior Planner and Director of the
New York Regional Office for Candeub. FIfl.sstg and As.so-ciates.
Newark. New Jersey; personally (he planner in
charge of projects inv<jlving over 35 cities in New Yt>rk,
New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. He prepared
plans for Freeport's Bennington Hark Project al Ihis time.
Prior to joining Candeub. Fleissig and Associates in January
1959. he was an Urban Renewal Phniner with City Planning
Associates. Mishawaka, Indiann.
Most recently Mr. Dunne has been acting as a plainiing
consultant for tlie Village of Freeport for the North Main
Street Zoning Study. He is a member of the New York
State Association of Renewal and Housing Officials, and of
ether professional planning organizations.
He received his Bachelor of Architecture degree from
the University of Notre Dame in 1961. He is married and
has four children. His home is in Garden City.
A graduate of Our Holy
Redeemer School and St. Agnes
High in Rockville Center, Miss
Collins waited a bit before going
to college, When she did decide to
go. however - she went all the
way. While working in the office
of Nolan and Glacken Insurance
Co.. she completed her pre-law
and law school in five years of
night and summer classes. She
graduated cum laude, passed her
bar exams on the first try and
was admitted before the bar on
Octdjer ist, 1951.
Judge Collins entered private
practice in 1952 and remained
until 1958 when she became
Assistant Town Attorney for the
town of Hempstead. This was
followed by her appointment to
Deputy Town Attorney in 1960
&nd Special Counsel to the Zoning
Beard of the Town of Hempstead
in 1961. She remained as special
counsel untjl January of 1969
when she was selected as Confidential
Law assistant by Judge
Derounian of the State Supreme
Court.
In addition to her legal accomplishments,
our newest judge
has many civic activities credib
among which are a twenty-five
year tenure as a director of\]8>ur
Lady of Consolation Home for the
aged in Amityvllle. five years on
(he Freeport Board of Zoning
Appeals as memt)er and Vlce-
Cbairman; a member of the
Citizens Committed For Community
Planning and several
years as a member of the
Economic Opportunity Commission
among others.
When questioned as to whether
ihe would like to see any changes
made in the system, the charming
jurist declined to make any
criticism other than that whtqh is
5 so,
shared by most in the legal
profession; that is the lack of
sufficient personnel both judicial
and clerical needed to reduce the
courts' backlog and waiting time.
Judge Collins thanked Ihe^
Republican organization for
appointing her and stated that .
she was pleased to see women./
recognized within the Judiciary.
To a question concerning her
f^ilosophy and desires regarding
the bench, Judge Collins replied
"I Just hope to b6 as good as niy ;
predecessors and those judges
currently sitting." She further
stated that she looked forwaitl to
her task and to working under the
administration of Presiding
Judge James Niphoff of Baldwin.
At this point, the interview
ended. She had to get back to her
meeting of Jhe Catholic
