Annual Police Report
Shows Crime Reduction
The Freeport Police had a busy
year in 1971 according to the
Annual Report submitted by
Chief Anthony Elar to Mayor
Hobert Sweeney and the Board of
Trustees. A total of 1250 arrets
were made during the year as
compared to 961 the year
previous. This is one facet of the
•comprehensive report showing
increased activity in many areas
but substantial reductions in
some major crimes. (SEE

All categories of thefts
declined, except burglaries,
which were up from 424 in 1970 to
572 in 1971. Auto thefts were down
from 327 to 254 and larcenies
were reduced from 1479 to 1148.
There was a 22% reduction in the
number of stolen cars.
Chief Elar attributed the
overall drop in thefts to the

all Freeporlers aware of the
importance of being watchful
against suspicious persons or
criminal activity. Many crimes
were prevented, the Chief
declared, because potential
thieves knew the public was on
the alert.
He reported that in the
Uniformed Division 3762 local
complaints were investigated,
and 3256 sick or injured persons
were aided. Summonses were
issued to 3212 moving violations,
and 168 stolen autos were
recovered.
In praising the efforts of his
men. Chief Elar pointed out that
123 letters were received from
the public during the year
commending the work of individual
policemen in various
situations and expressing their
thanks to the department. Eight

The breakdown on the 1972-73
Expenditure Budget, up for
approval al the June 13 election,
has been issued by the Freeport
Board of Education.
The proposed 1972-73 budget of
$13,753,929 Is Up $1,075,337, from
the estimated 1971-72 expenditures
of $12,678,592.
Of the total, $7,902,940, an increase
of $686,325 over last year,
Is for salaries; $1,793,195, up
$159iiSS, for Costs Based On or
Connected with Salaries;
$1,065,870, Increase of $47,845, for
BOCES; $1,060,495, up $226,995,
for Debt Service; $545,175, up
$3,800. for Transportation;
$449,393, up $20,668, for Instructional
Equipment, Supplies;
$240,575, up $5,700, for Utilities;
$146,114, up $6,114, for Insurance;
$108,450, down $29,900, for
General Administrative Costs;
$91,210. down $12,290, for
-Operation and Maintenance
Contracts; $112,385, up $515, for
Operation and Maintenance
Equipment and Supplies; $1,475,
down $108,832, for Judgments and
aaims; $115,500, up $28,075 for
Summer Programs, Adult
Education and Tutorial
Program; $72,685, up $43,685. for
Inter Fund Transfers; and
148,487, down $2,558, for Data
Processing Equipment and
Supplies.
The 1972-73 Freeport Memorial
Library budget will appear on the
t)allot as Proposition #2. The
amount of taxes to be raised to
cover the proposed budget would
. be $427,253, up $32,430 from last
year. The breakdown is $82,750,
up $9,700, for Books, Periodicals,
Bindings; $28,950, up $2,800, for
Maintenance of the Library
Operating Expenses; $32,550, up
$4,400, for Equipment, Repairs
and Supplies; $4,000 for Bookmobile,
the same as last year.
and $.104,003. up $19,030, for
Salaries.
Proposition #3 is sponsored by a
resident's petition liearing the
names of 350 registered voters
which proposes that the mile
limit in which children may be
transported to private and
parochial schools by School
District funds be expanded from
the present 10 miles to 15. No
figures as to the added costs oi
such a program are now
available.

the School Board Elections and
Budget Vote. June 13, is June 6
from I to 9 pm at all elementary
schools.

Praiident Harold Levins, who
has released a breakdown on the'
1972-73 proposed Sdiool Budget
Mr. Levins will also tie seeking
reelection in the June 13
voting.
