That annual problem, leaves,
will soon be faUing on the lawns
and streets of Freeport and
Public Worics Superintendent
Edwin Prefer is asking all
residents to cooperate with his
department in making their
removal as efficient and effective
as possible.
Beginning in October the
Department will start a leaf
collection program so that each
homeowner will have leaves
picked up at least once a week.
This can be accomplished only if
each homeowner cooperates by
placing his leaves in plastic bags.

property or your neighbore' and

If the leaves are bagged the
Village forces expect to be able to
pick up an unlimited amount at
each hfime in accordance with
the following schedule of pick up
areas:
Mondays - Northwest • Sunrise
Highway north to the Village line
. North Main Street west to the
Village line.
Tuesdays - Southeast - Sunrise
Highway south to the Village line,
South Grove St. east to the
Village line.
Thursdays - Northeast - Sunrise
Midway north to the Village line.
North Main Si. east to the Village
line.
Fridays - %)uthwest Sunrise
Highway south to the Village line.
South Gfove St. west to the
Village line.
This program will l>e carried
out by Highway Department
personnel using packer trucks.
The Sanitation Department will
also pick up bagged leaves on
Wednesdays, not exceeding four
bags per home.
Extra large and heavy duty
plastic bags may be purchased at
Village Hall at a minimal cost of
10 bags for a dollar.
Should the Mayor of Freeport be a full-time position?
Although the Village Board has set a public hearing for
Monday, September 25, 9 pm at Village Hall, to air an Increase
in the Mayor's salary from the present $7,000 per
year to $30,000, In actuality the question on the floor will
be whether residents will be voting for a part-time Mayor,
as is presently the case, in the March, 1973 elections, or
a full-time head. The hearing is tfie firet step in tfie legal
procedures required for a public referendiim on the question.

Mayor Sweeney has in^icat&A that he and oAer members
of ttie Village Board will ask their supporters to get the
necessary signatures on petitions to assuie a full scale public
vote. It is the intention of die Village Board to put the
question on the voting machines in November, in Freeport
election districts, tfie Mayor said. "We have been advised
by Counsel that we cannot simply put this to a direct
public referendum, under the State law," Mayor Sweeney
said. "Therefore we must go to this cumbersome procedure
of a local law, public hearing and petitions of about 2,000
signatures.
' i hope the people of Freeport, in voting on this question,
will not think in terms of individuals but on the issue

LENT OPENS DRIVE FOR RE-EtECTION: Conp'estman Norman
F. tent opened hit bid for rejection with the help of New York
State Attorney General, Louli Lefkowitz and a host of other dignitaries
last Saturday afternoon. The Attorney Genend, pictured being

Mipporters who took part In the fetthrities, iraimly praised the incumbent
Legislator and urpd support for his n^election efforts in
the newly'drawn 4th Congrenlonal District.
