School At a meeting Tuesday evening, Mr. Charles Dvorak, of
t|ijet.4rcliitffctiiial,Orm.o,C James D. Lothrop Assoc, White
Plains, New York presented to the Board of Education a
plan for renovating the Dodd Jr. High School at an
approximate cost of 3.3 million dollars.
The proposed plan which was to be voted on Wednesday
evening, February 2nd by the Board, calls for a new wing
containing a cafeteria, Ubrary and gymnasium to be constructed
and connected by a corridor to the present
structure.
Should the Board of Education approve the plan, the
next stofi would be to have Lothrop Associates fiunish
A fire qf undetermined origin broke out In the Emstrom home at 332 Park Awe. on January 26tfi
at 10:30 A.M.
Mrs. ITieresa Emstrom whose husband, an airline pilot, wai on flight duty at the time was at home with
her mother-in-law when the fire was discovered.
According to Fire Chief Capozzli, the fire which apparently started in an upstairs bedroom was brought
under control by 11 A.M. Damage has been estimated at $20,000,00. There were no injuries reported.
Cooperation Nabs Thieves Jack Heaiy
The combination of involved
citizenry and the prompt and
professional action of Freeport's
finest last Wednesday thwarted
the attempts of two would-be
burglars.
Patrolman A. Zimmers report
gives the following description of
the incident.
While on patrol with Patrolman
Parker. Patrolman Zimmer in
Car No. 8 received a call at 8:48
p.m. reporting a possible
burglary in progress at (39 Mount
Joy Avenue.
Proceeding immediately to the
area, the patrolman questioned
neighbors who had called the
Police Dept. The neighbors had
noticed lights in the subject house
and they knew that the residents
were out for the night.
At this point, the patrolmen
split up. with Parker covering the
front and Zimmer the rear. In
passing to the rear of the house,
Patrolman Zimmer noticed a
broken basement window. Once
in the rear of the house, Zimmer
saw a man looking out of an
upstairs window. Using his
walkie-talkie, the patrolman
called headquarters for
assistance and then notified his
partner that he was going In
through the rear door.
A^-seijpnd car containing
Sergeant Snook and Patrolman
Honeyman arrived within
moments. Patrolman Zimmer
made his way through the kitchen
towards the front of the house.
Upon entering the living room, he
came upon two men, jHe unsuccessfully
attempted to grab
one of the men as they dove
through the closed front window.
Patrolman I'arker in the front
of the house ordered the meh to
freeze but they ran around to the
back of the house. Rather then
shoot, the three patrolmen
pushed on foot as the men ran
East through back yards and
over fences.
Sgt. Snook meanwhile
positioned himself on North Main
Street. While waiting in the patrol
car, he saw a man running
toward him. He dismounted and
caught the man in front of 411 N.
Main St. The man had glass
particles in his hair and bits of
shrubbery on his clothes.
Patrolman Zimmer then identified
the man as one of the
perpetrators.
The man, identified as Ernest
Martin Jones, 18, of 411 N. Main
St.. FYeeport, was turned over to
Detective F^imo of the Nassau
County Police. Mr. Jones Identified
31 year old Walter Black-man
as his accomplice in the
burglary. Blackman was later
picked up at the N. Main Street
address and brought to the 1st
Precinct.
In concluding his report,
Patrolman Zimmer credited the
alert action of neighbors along
with the walkie-talkie and the
excellent back-up of the other
policemen in the apprehension of
the robbers

THANKS FOR A JOB WELL DONE: The Freeport Chamber of
Commerce honored Harry Chuisano, Superintendent of Highwayi
and Bill Noll. Building Superintendent and awarded both gentlemen
plaques for their outstanding service to our village during their years
of employment. Program took place at Chamber of Commerce
luncheon at Schooner Restaurant Thursday, Januan^ 27th. A large
group of friends honored both men on their recent retirement
