A nine-year-old Freeport girl is
listed in good condition in Doctors
Hospital after being abducted,
sexually assaulted and ac^
cidently shot in both legs white
being rescued, . rL
According to Freeport police,
the girl and Ker Jl-year-old sister
were on the way* to the store in the
vicinity of Lena and North Ocean
Avenues Shortly after .9 pm
Saturday when Johnnie Davis

„ stopping his car, opening the dqor
and asking the younger,child if
she would like to mak6 some
money. As the child came-closer
he grabbed her into the cayand
sped away. -^ _.
A friend of the cWld's family,
William-Caldwell of Brooklyn,
learning of the incident rushed
out into the street and flagged
down-Freeport Police Sgt. Henry
—Schwanger who was on routine
patrol. WiU> a description of the
car, SchWanger radioed Police
- Headquarters where the information
was transmitted to all
members, of the force. Within
minutes, Patrolman_^eEard
Savarese, a l6-yeiar-old veteran
of the fprcej, sotted tlie car,
Irorilcaliy packed biehind the
Police- Headguarters- In the
municipal parklrtg lot oh North
Grove Street. Savarese drew his
,38-cal. pistol and approached the
ear, Davis tried to escape by
lputting-the~car in reverse but
onlysucceededjn slamm
Savarcse's patrol car. Davis then
left the car as did the girl who
was only partially clothed.
rDurlng the ensuing struggle
Savarese's gun went off striking
the girl. Police Chief Anthony
Elar could not comment to THE
LEADER as to the exact details
of the shooting since Patrolman
Saviare^ must appear before the
Grand Jury as is routine in such

Sgt. Schwanger arrived on the
scene and transported the girl to
the hospital while Savarese
placed Davis und^r arrest.
