Organization, at a press conferenceSunday
morning, announced
that they would deliver a
letter to Nassau County District
Attorney "William Cahn. th6
following day requesting his
office to investigate the recent
Newsday "Influence"
allegations. On Monday morning
THE LEADER r«:elved a call
from the organization which

Mayor Responds
Tuesday. Mayor William H.
White denounced the attempts of
"a small group of self appointed
Democratic spokesmen" to make
a criminal investigation from.the
Newsday stories as "nothing but
• political opportunism of the worst
kind."
"This small band of
politicians," Mayor White said,
"has seized upon the recent
Newsday stories as a vehicle to
try to ruin the traditional
Freeport system of local independent
parties. They won't be
happy until Republicans are
pitted against Democrats in
Village elections, which would be"
the beginning of the end of local
government In Freeport, .
•i don't blame the District
Attorney's office for responding
to the loud political cries for an
Investigation," Mayor White
said, "He can't ignorie such a
request, no matter what the
source.-Although Idldn't' want to
dignify their politically
motivated demands, 1 am sure jin
investigation by the District
Attorney will finally put the
Newsday lies and distortions to
rest, .
"I have directed the Village
Clerk to cooperate fully'and
provide any information"
requested by representatives of
the District Attorney," Mayor
White said. "We know we have
nothing to fear from the truth,
and we, know that, unlike the
dishonest Newsday reporters, we
will get adeterminatlon based on
the facts -and the facts are that
at no time did I ever tiklany
action to benefll^myself or any
other individual at the expense of
the Village."
To illustrate the purely
political motivation of the few
Democrats involved, Mayor
White pointed to an unsigned
flyerdistributed Just before last
wek's election.
