FREEPORT - The Work-Experience Program offered to students" at
Freepori High School was the featured presentation to a larger than
usual audience at the first Freeport Board of Education Meeting of the

luncheon meeting held in New
York City on September 2(). the
village of Freeport received' a
Special Citation for significant
improvements in its pedestrian
safety program.
The award, presented by the
American Automobile Association,
was accepted by Deputy
Mayor Dorothy Storm and village
police Lt. Joseph M. Boland.
The citation is based on what
the AAA terms a -dramatic"
50% increase in. the village's
pedestrian program activities
during the past year. Th? improvement
encompasses 'the

FREEPORT - After a 13 year absence, offshore power racing is returning
to this waterfront village as the First Annual Guy Lombardo
Gold Cup is run Saturday. September 30. The race is the last of this
season's offshore circuit events and will determine the national championships
in a sport which sees compel iiors going up to 90 miles per
hour;

the only fenule participant, begin

Boats On Panide'
Twenty of the boats, which
range up to 35 feet long, will
inake their first appearance on
Thursday. September 28. at
6:30 pm when they will be paraded
through the village. The
parade.route starts at the Guy
Lombardo Marina (foot of Guy
Lombardo Avenue).' north on
Lombardo to. Atlantic Avenue,
east to South Main Street, north
to Merrick Road, west to Lombardo.
south to Front Street,
west to Ocean Avenue, south to
Richmond Street; east to Wood-deft
Avenue*! north to Front
Street, east to Lombardo and
south to the Marina. The boats
will be accompanied by the Free-port
High School Marching Band
With the Freeport Fire Department
Band playing at the review-

IHre Island to the Ambrose Light,
viewing from the barrier beaches,
particulariy from Jones Beach,
should be excellent. Spectators
will also be allowed to watch
from pleasure crafts in designated
areas. There will also be a
"Hot Wire Room" at the Marina
where the progress of the race
can be followed via telecommunications,
charts and blackboards.
There is S25.(XX) in prize money
for the winners of the Guy Lombardo
Gold Cup.
