The Freeport School Board held it's annjial public budget hearing, at -
which they outlined the 522,3527108 proposed budget for the 1979-80
school year, last Thursday night, April 26. in the high sch«»l auditorium.
The hearing provides the occasion for discussion and comment by
the public before the final ^ludgct is presented for voting on May 23.
Any changes made in the budget
after the public hearing v*ill be . „ . , ,
incorporated into the budget amounts allowed for conferences
for teachers and guidance counselors,
as compared to the
amounts allowed for board
members and central administrators.
Costlow explained that a
number of the federally funded
programs provide money for
travel and there have, been
sufficient- funds • to handle
teachers' requests to go to conferences.
Nowadavs, too. there Is
little need for.guidance counselors
to visit colleges; as a result of
the competition for students, the
colleges now send their representatives
to the high schools.
" The proposed school budget
will appear on the ballot as Proposition
tl. It represents an increase
of approximately 5% over
last year's budget, producing a
tax rate of SI8.85 per SlOO of
assessed valuation, a 96t increase-
