to pay for 75%.
The assessment district would
ran from the south side of Free-pottPlaza
East on the north to the
north side of Merrick Road on the
toutb; and from the east side of
Church Street, as Us westerly
border to the west side of Benson
Place on its easterly border.
. Besides the 35 pairUn'g spaces
wh)d» woiild be created, the mall
would be extended on its Newton
Boulevard side and parking field
fl2. expanded fiom behind
Samet's store. The proposal calls
for acquiring and leveling the
check cashing, sign, fish and
record stores on Newton. The car
wash presently there would
remain.
WhUe the board directed
village counsel to prepare for the
public hearing and-asked the
village treasurer and engineers to
cooperate in determining the
assessment district and individual
costs, several flexible general '
figures were quoted by Dunne.
He told the board that the total
assessed valuation of the district
proposed is SI,933,080 and that
the costs for acquiring the land,
deroolitbn, construction and
administrative expenses are
figured to be approximately
ding to the village
treasurer, a quick, calculation

would jiay S931.16 for each

Board, but Trustee Timothy
called the plln "necessary...!
think" she said, "thit 35 parking
spaces would alleviate some of
the congestion."
• Dunne Indicated to the board *-
that, by their next meeting (July
23), he would probably-hiVflhe
facts necessary to allow them to
schedule the necessary public
heating.
• In December, 1978, the ViUage
Board held a public hearing to
consider the establishment of a
special assessment district that
would create 100 new parking
spaces and would spread the
costs 75% to property districts in
a larger assessment district and
25% to the village as a whole. The
proposal was greeted by miied
feelings from residents and
business people. Residents
opposed paying the 25% of the
costs and some who lived within
the wider drawn district vehemently
protested the sped*]
tax. Businessmen, on the other
hand, suggested that even more
parking was necessary for the
Central Business District.-The .
board reserved decision on the
proposal and never acted on the
measure.
Use of some Community
Development funds for a proposal
that would include a logical
extension of the Mall wu proposed
by Pctemana and Trustee
Jim Oatk when they tan for
election this past winter.
