FREEPORT - The five person village Planning Biurd has reciim-mended
a change of zoning for the Elks Club property, and the property
immediately cast of it on Merrick Road. The Bird's 3-2 decision,
which is purely an advisor>- one. was made at their regularly scheduled
meeting Tuesday night. October 23. It followed by more than a
week the Nassau County Plan
nlng Board's disapproval of such
a change of rone for the Elks Club
site.
The Elks Oub property has
been purchased by two Freeport
businessmen. Morris Sussman
and George Bclicsls. who more
than a yar ago developed a small
group of retail stores on Atlantic
and South Ocean Avenues. The
two also purchased, and request-,
ed and received zoning changes,
•for property on-rtic- corner of
Atlantic Avenue and South Main
Street, where they plan construction
of other stores.
The application before the
Planning Board was to change the
zoning from Business AA to Business
B. The County Board In. its
disapproval called the change
''spot zoning." noting that the
surrounding and contiguous areas
to the plot Here zoned either
Business AA. the most restrictive
business zone in the village, or for
apartment houses.
