What firemen/called "a very
bad Rre" was first spotted at
qiptoidmately 10 pm: Brown and
a^rifiieod, Ann Kelly, were
playing a round of miaiatve golf
at nearby Naoley'a Amosement
Park, wiiicfa borders on the rear
yard of the Hoffman's house.
Noticing smoke coming from the
upper floors of the house. Brown

-called by a neighbor, responded
with 90 men aad eight pieces of
equipment under Chief St^ields.

Milbnm Avenue between Kfetrick
Koad and Sunrise Highway and,
within 20 minutes had the fire
under coottol. However, they
were unable to reach the victim
6ntil tliey knocked down the fire.
When be was reached, officials
report. Smith had alrady.died.

Berg and Fire Investigator Joseph
Schweitter, of tlie Nassau County
Fire Marshal's Office, investigated
the fire and determined it to
be accidental, probably — authorities
report — started by
