22 Soper Avenue. The neighbor,
Stella. Brzniak, reported bearing
loud explosions and seeing flames
coming frarn the roof of the
Gedon's house.
The Baldwin Fire Department*
quickly. respoodiHl. but the house
was already engnifed in flames.
After knowing down the initial
wave,of fire, firemen entered the
horae wliere they found Mis.
Gedoo in an upstairs bedroom
and her &3-year-oId husband.
John, in a downstairs t>edroom.
Both were nubed to South
Nassau Communities Hospital in
Oceanside, wljcre Mrs. Uedon
•was pTonounced dead upon
arrivil. Siic liad suffered second
and third degree burns on fCVt of
her body.
Mr. Gedon, with second and

of his body, was transferred to
Nassau County Medical Center in
East Meadow from wiiere a
Nassau County Police helicopter
flew him to tike beli-pad at Cornell
Univer^ Medical Center's Burn
Unit in Manhattan. At press time,
Mr. Gedon's coadiHoa was listed
as extremely critioU.'
The fire was fooglit by-^S

under the direction of Baidwio
Fne -Chief Robert Nobte. The'
blaze, which totally destroyed ttie .
' home, was declared under control
' itiortty after midnight.
According . to the Nassau
County Fire Marshal's office and
'the Nassau County Police Depart-'
ment Arson Squad the cause of
the blaze was apparently careless
smoking in ttM downsturs bed-room.
The investigation is continuing
under Detective. Berg of
tlie Arson Squad and lovestigator
Sclrweitzer of the Fire Marshal's
Office. •

In outlining and describing the
problem. NEFCA president Fran

cussed Broadway, an east-west
street running from Main Soeet
to Columbus Avenue. "We outlined
and discussed procedures
we are going to take to get Some
kind of help to straighten out the
situation." said Mrs.Campion after
the meeting.
- Mrs. Campion and other members

LEADER that there was "open
drug dealing" oii the street.. One
member said his car liad been
stopped twice on Broadway, at
two different times of day-, and he
was told. "I got it all; anything
you want."

County. The present structure
consists of the buildmg constructed
as Worid War I Memorial and
an axid'ition completed in 19S8.
Presently, tlie library bouses
al>out 230.000 volumes and there
are over 20'iSOO registered borrowers.
Title to the present ^uild'mg

Incorporated Village of Freeport
wliich, in ezclunge for library
service to the entire village,
pertmts free use of the facility by
the Ubrary.
