LONG ISLAND -.In anticipation of the holiday season's usual
increase in drunk drinng incidents, both the Nassau County iud
Freepon Police Departments have instituted special programs.
Nassau Police Commissioner Samuel J. Rozzi has sent letters and
posters bearing the message "Don't let the holiday party be a prelude
to tragedy," to over 5,000 corporations
and agencies in Nassau
CVyonty.
- Rozzi's letters ask employers to
monitcn' or curb alcoholic con-'
sumption at the trMUtional
holiday parties many buslDesses
sponsor for their employees.
"We are rwt naive," explained
Hozri,- "and we do i w t bdleve
that our message win stop people
lirom drinking. Our hope is that
they win 6irb their drinking or, if
tbey drink, they will iv3t drive.''
The Freeport Police Depait-mest,
according to Capt. David
Median, has advised hs post and
traffic patrols to be even more,,
alert for the impaired or dmnken
drivers to insure a safer, happier
holiday season for every one.
' The pofice, Meehan says, have
already arrested 41 persons for
drunken driving this year in the
village and arrests usuaDy go up
daring the holidays.
This, past week, there were
three attests in Freeport. On
Friday, November W, at about
12 JO in the muiuing, a 51-year-o)
d Texas man was arrested at
Sunrise Highway and BayWew
Avenue. Joseph Wing of 12106
Perthshire in Koostoo was
charged with a DWI offense,
later that day, at about 11:30
pra, Freeport Police. Officers
Robert Paulik and Tom Garrity
allegedly observed a man ~
slumped over the steering wheel
of. his car. .According to the
o01cen'. later report, the man
identiSed as Evaristo Me&ut of -
66 l^osedale Avenue in Freaeport, -
had the odor df.alcolioroii his
breath and staggered when he
walked. According to the police,
the 40-year-oId driver admitted to
Paulik that he had been drinking.
In discosang drinking during
the holidays, or any other time for
that matter, Capt.' Meehan says
the police suggest caQing a friend
or taxi (or those who may have
had "one too many. It is smarter
that way than to teU it to tb« judge
in the moFaing," says Meehan.
ftozn's letter to employers also
gives advice and. speaking of the
holiday season's many oppor-tnnities'fcv
families, friends and
feOcrw workers to. get together in
the boUday spirit," says, "don't
make those meetings a prelude to
tragedy."
Rozzi recommends that if
employees feel they must drink at
holiday' parties, they drink in
moderatioo. Businesses should
