FREEPORT - The Freeport Hre
Department, under the leadership
of its Chief Lee Tuchplski,
captured first place in the 113th
annual New York State Firemen's ..
Association Parade, held Sunday,
August 25, in Wlliston Park.
This marks Freeport's fourth
consecutive first place finish in
'cbmpetition parades this
summer.
Despite miserable weather.
Freeport placed a total of 75 men .
in line, the largest contingent of
any department in the State
parade. With the department
band leading the way, the Free-'
porters once again turned up first
in terms of receiving the least
amount of demerits while marching'.
The results were announced
shortly before 9 pm as the depait-
- ment returned to the village, and
a village-mde-radio notificaUon
was sent out to tell all the members
the good news.
"There's no way anyone can
imagine how great it. feels to
march in firont of such a fine
group," Chief Tucholski said.
"1 s^dute each and every member^.
for it is they who have.done the
hard work and made it possible
for us to be ranked number onel"
All the department chiefs and'
oflicers expressed their thanks to
the members, who have turned
out so enthusiastically during
what has become one of the
greatest parade seasons ever.
The chiefc were quick to note
their appreciation also to the
department band, and to former
Chief . Dick M'"thauer, who
continues to excel in, keeping the
members in step and in line.
"At the beginning of the
season, we had hoped to take one
or two firsts, and maybe more.
But to win every big parade thus
far goes beyond my wildest
dreams. Its like dreaming you've
won the lottery!" said Tucholski.
The department won't have
long'lo rest on its big win. They
will be back in competition again
this coming weekend at the
annual Labcr Day Parade, which
is slated for Sunday, September
1, in Hicksville.
