Sen. Levy To Fonim
Dnig Tad^ Force Reports
FREEPORT - The
. Freeport Advisory Task
Force on Drugs, set up
last April by Village
Mayor Dorothy Storm,' has
now submitted its report,
which Includes 57 recommendations.
' Task Force co-chair-penoD,
Tedd Levy, in
discussing the various suggestions,
commented that
Task Force members felt
there ; should be ' more
family involveiftent and
total community effort;in
the fight against drug
abuse. Levy is Executive
Director of Operation
PRIDE, a drug abuse
counselling age&cyJin. the .
Village.
In making recommendations
about activities
concerning the 'Freeport
Says No To Drugs* cam-,
paign. the Task Force
noted that "the isolation of
the adolescent 'subculture'
from the rest of the community
is thought to significantly
contribute to
young people beginning to
use drugs."
To combat this problem,
the Task Force suggested
. - the enc6ura|emenr of
family activities, such as
parents spending more
time with their children;
more parent / child activities;
and community activities
that do not segregate
patents from their
children because of age.
Activities specifically suggested
include a parent /
child vblleyball league at
the Fxeeport Recreation.
Center, parent attendance
.. at youth leagues, and the
encouragement of youth
participation at all levels
: by civic associations and
service groups.
' In another recoamenda-
. lion, the Task Force noted
the lack of involvement
by people with their
neighbors' children, and
suggesu such efforts to
encourage a sense of
community as a possible
"Freeport — We Are a
Family" campaign, which
could include neighbor-
Rood meetings, block parties,
picnics, etc.
Calling Freeport
"fortunate" to have a facility
such as the Freeport
Recreation Center^ the
Task Force suggested increased
parent involvement
or staff supervision.
"This is not to imply that
supervision is lacking," the
report went on. Our point
if that the more adult influence
... the more, we
avoid the isolation of the
adolescent 'subculture." .
It was also suggested
that activities in local
parks be increased to allow
more young people to
take advantaie of the village's
recreation programs.
The Task Force recommended
that .it remain active
or that aome-tJther^
group be developed ' to
continue its work, focusing
primarily on the activities
involved In the
•Freeport Says No To
Drugs" campaign. The
recommendations include
holding a previously cancelled
parade, and the inclusion
of youth as regular
members. ' •

was co-chaired by Levy
