BALDWIN - The Science Computer Resource Center
at Baldwin Senior High School celebrated its official
opening on May 15. - •. .
Although the Center . has - been operational since

State Senator Dean G.
Skelos for obtaining the
$60,000 grant for the
School District.
The is'tate grant had provided
$30,000 to make the
Center a reality. The. remaining
$30,000 was to be
used to implement the
Growing Healthy program
in the elementary schools. '
When fully operational,
the Science Computer Resource
Center will provide
for a number of areas of
instruction, including.
computer " literacy, key- '
boarding skills and the use
"of-an integrated application
program.
The SCRC also contains
an interface to a weather
station and a teacher resource
room. This addition
to Baldwin High School's
already fine science program
provides the students
with hands-on experience
in the field of scientific
research.'

of. the Freeport High
School Class of '87,. their
famiiief and friends, were
guests at the school's I9th
annual Honors Program
held on Satiirday evening,
June >!0, at the school.
The school's principal
Mr. William P. McElroy
greeted the guests and
acted as "emcee" for the
program, McElroy's last at
the school as he retires
this ye^r.
Among those, who joined
. McElroy in saying a few,-
Vords at the beginning of^
the program were Calvel
Venzeo, presidettt of. the
School Board, . and Dr.
-John' E. Bterwirth,
Freeport Superintendent
of Schools.
Yenzen /called the
. evening "probably the
most rewarding ' occasion
for all my fellow, board
members."- He asked -the
graduating seniors to "turn:
to their parents and. thank .
ttera for. everything
they've done for them."
Bierwirth called the
Class of '87's achievements
"truly wonderful."
\He noted that the number
oC^ Regents Scholarship
winners was the.highest.it
had been in a long time.
This was echoed by
McElrdy, who then went
on to recognize some of
the achievements of members
of the Class of '87.
He noted that Kevlo Rugg
was.a National Merit Finalist,
winning & $2,000
scholarship sponsored by

Village Has Proposal for
Retail Use Of Properfy
FREEPORT - The village-owtied, 10-acre Fireman's
• Field is now being offered for isale and development for
retail and/or office use. . ' ;^.,
The property' is par\ of a two part- package, with the
second parcel a 2.4-acre-site in the heart of Freeport's
downtown area.
Well-known developer
Nathan Serota^has already
submitted a proposal for.
retail use at Fireman's
Field and office use in the
Urban Renewal area.
Discussion at the . June
22nd Village Board meeting
of a proposed contract
.between--.the ' .'Vtllage • of
Freeport and its. planning
agency, RPPW, Inc., for
assistance in apijlying fo.r
an Urban Deveiopmetit
Action Grant (UDAG)
was the first public action
on the matter.
The Fireman's Field
propeityj which fronts on
Sunrise Highway, is close
to the north/south Mead-owbrook
Parkway, a major'county.

coupled Fireman's Field
with the -Municipal Stadium
and a passive park
on Prospect Street, proceeds
of the sate Of Fireman's

The downtown site, offered
with .Fireman's
Field, is presently designated
as "Urban Renewal,
Phase Two." It is bounded
by the former National
Bank of North America
building at the intersection
of Grove Street, Sunrise
Highway and Freeport
Plaza West, east fo the
western side ' of . Church
Street, with the southern
boundary Sunrise Highway
and the northern one Plaza
West, which will be closed
as part of the redevelopment
site. :
