Freeport school, fibrary budgets approved
Freeporieis went to the polls
last week and passed both school
district and library budgets by a
wide margin, although less than
1,000 votes were cast.
The vote on^ the $48,760,863
school budget, which vrill raise
'taxes by 82.7 cents per $100 of
assessed valuation, was 603 in
favor ai^d 365 against. Board of
Education President Dorothy
Fox, running unopposed for
another three-year term on the
board, amassed 770 votes.
Dr. John E. Bierwirth, Superintendent
of Schools, attributed
the low turnout in part to "a general
trend taking place in. all
communities," and also to what
he said was "a very low increase
with no controversial budget,
items."
The tax increase was held to
under a dollar despite inclusion
of estimated teacher-salary
increases and additional health
insurance costs of $981,243 due
largely to the 62 percent rate hike
levied by the Sute's Empire
Health Flan. The budget also
mduded the last major payment
on the District's' Capital
Improvement Project covering
all major projects to completion.
The- Freeport Memorial
Library budget was approved by
a vote of 594 in favor and 329
against. The library's $2,203,959
budget, will cost Freeport'S' taxpayers
