A ruling issued July 28 by the
Federal Energy Regulatory
Commiuion (FERC) upholds
the contention of the Municipal
Electric Utilities Association of
New York Sute (MEUA) thai
the Power Authoriiy of the S u te
of New York (PASNY) has been
shortchanging Freeport and
other municipally-owned and
operated power plants while
fa\-oTing in\-estor-owned utilities.
This infonnatton was gi>*en to
The Leader by William Cominos,
general nunager of the Freeport
po*tt utility, who is also att
MEUA \-ice-president, at the
conclusion of the regular Board
of Tnutces meeting July 31 in the
Village Hall, where the subject of
planning for "fut ire power needs
of local consumers tn the most
prudent nianner"wasacted upon
in another phase of the ongoing
projection of choices.
"This FERC ruling which
upholds the determination of the
Administrati\-e Law Judge after
lengthy hearings." Mr. Coiainos
said, "could mean annual savings
for Freeport of approximately
S2.4 million, or about a 10 percent
reduction in consumer
rates." i
Although PASNY is likely to
appeal, Mr. Cominos was conft-dent
that the FERC ruling would
be upheld because of its soundness
under the provisions of the
Niagara Redevelopment Act
(NRA) under which PASNY
operates.
During the meeting the Trustees
also authorized Mr. Cominos
to spend up to SS0.000 additionally
for completing the study
on behalf of the Water and Light
CommissioD that was begun by
the prt-qualificd fi%-e consulting
firms that have been evaluating
whether developeri arc available
and interested in providing reliable
and economical power under
contract with the Village.
This is one of the options being
considered by the Trustees, along
