Residents of Freeport and
Baldwin will go to the polls
on Tuesday, November 7, to
vote on ttate ofTices nnd
county and town candidates.
Polls are open frwn 6 a.m. to
9pjii.
Ballot proposal
The ballot proposal is an
amendment to the New York
State Constitution, which
seeks to make a county
responsible and liable for the
acts of its sheriff by removing
the constitutional clause
making a sheriff personalty
liable for the offldal acts of
the sheriff and sheriffs
deputies. This proposal is
intended to give county shcr-iffJB
the same liability status
as that of other county ofG-cers
whose liability is
assumed by the county.
Before the 1930*. the sheriff
was permitted to keep for
himself the fees that he and
his deputies collected for
their official acts, but since
then he has been a salaried
officer and no longer benefits
from his official acts. The
sheriff is the only public official
in New York State who is
not protected by the municipal]^
which he serves.
