Shopping Center ready
Poised for openings and ready lo go

square foot Meadowbrook Commons
Shopping Center on Sunrise Highway
in Frccport
With a Foodtown Supcrmatkcl and
Walgreen's Drugs set to open this
wcfk, other tenants on the 9.5 acre site
of the former Fireman's Field near the
Freeport/Merrick border can be
expected lo "trickle in during October,
and all be open by mid-November,"
said Greg Saunders, vice president of
Philips Associates, the developer of
Meadowbrook Commons.
A list of the soon-lo-open stores
includes many familiar names and
' some not so familiarl In addition to
Foodtown and Walgreen's, other
tenants include Pier One Imports,
Kiddy City Toy Store, Petland Food
Discounts, Fashion Bug, Parade of.
Shoes. Dress Bam, Modell's Sporting
World, Everything Yogurt, RKO Video,
and Marshall's.
Fashion Bug, a national women's
apparel company with some 1200
stores, will be the lai^est in New York
State,, and one of the largest
nationwide, Mr. Saunders said. Parade
of Shoes, selling women's footwear,
and also a national concern, has almosi
400 stores throughout the country, '.
Roadwork around the shopping
center is also ncaring completion.
Frceport's Superintendent of Public
Works, David Lovejoy, said a traffic
signal will be installed at the Sunrise
Highway entrance to Meadowbrook
Commons. There are two additiotial
accesses on Buffalo Avenue, the
eastern border of the center. Left (und
turns will be prohibited from Buffalo
.Avenue onto Sunrise Highway.
The "traditional" style of the
shopping compIe;c was based upon
photos of local historic buildings
provided to the project's architects by
Mayor Dorothy Slonn.
CHEERING FOR HOMECOMING again this year will be FHS cheerleaders,
above at '89 parade. The "90 event, with pancakes, parade, football,
carnival arid plenty of music, will take place Saturday.

Freeport High School says "Come
Home to Freeport," as il celebrales its
1990 Homecoming with festivities
scheduled this Saturday.
. The events begin at 8:30 ajn. with
the traditional Kiwanis sponsored
Pancake Break-feast iii the FHS
cafeteria, where hungry Freepotters can
eat their fill.of pancakes, sausage,.
coffee and orange juice for (lie bargain
priceof S3 until II ajn.
Festivities continue with the annual
kick-off Homecoming Parade, featuring
colorful banners from each class,
cheerleaders, the Freeport Fire
Department Color Guard, and the Dodd
and FHS Marching Bands. The parade
will begin at 12:30 p.m. at Dodd and
proceed down Pine Street lo Emma
Field, where Frceport's Red Devils will
meet Port Washington beginning at
1:30 pjn. .
The gridiron half-time show will
feature the FHS Marching Band in a
tribute to the 1973-74 Wall of Fame
athletes. A student fair will include
games, sales, and a sure lo be popular,
"dunk the supervisor" booth. From
3:30 to 4:30 p.m. a reception will be
held in the cafeteria for returning
alumni with entertainment by the FHS
musk: department. The memorable day
will.conclude with a homecoming
dance. •
Be sure to watch for Frccpoit Dollars
for Scholars volunteers who will be on
hand at Emma Field asking for
scholarship donations for deserving
Freeport students.

FOODTOWN AND WALGREEN'S, neighbors at Meadowbrook Corhmons on
Sunrise Highway, will open this weekend. The Rsodtown 'superstore," largest
of the chain's Long Island maritets, wll open Friday, October 12. As of Last
weekend, Foodtown, at right, was waiting for its familiar togo. Walgreen's was

A car fire, a house fire and auto
accident and scuba rescues will all be
happening at the Freeport Recreation
Center this Sunday. But it's no
emergency-the dramatic events are
being staged by the Freeport Fire
Department as il presents it second Fire
PreventioaExhibitiod. . '
The popular event, which will take
place from 11 a.m. lo 4 p.m., also
features safety demonstrations and
drawings every half hour for smoke
detectors and fire extinguii^'rs. The :
FFD reminds Freeporters to bring
cameras to "shoot" tbdr little ones in
firenian's gear. .
