Frttporters were among those whose
resources, both personal and professional,
were called upon last Thursday
when the Columbian airline Avianca's ":
flight 52 crashed oh the North Shore.
Although the^ite of thetragnly. Cove

vehicles on the roads near Cove Neck,

"We wanted to get up there and do the
best w« could to help," said Fuefighter
Braun, who described the sceiK as "unbe-licveable.
I\e never seen an>lhing like
it," he said. "It was like a movie scene,
with bodies everywhere." _
The FFD volunteers worked with the
Hurst tool at the cockpit exits, and with
Jericho and Hicksville firefighters .
removed two crew members from the
crushed jetliner. They also assisted in
extricating several other victims froiri the
fonvard wreckage where most of the
fatalities-occurred, said firefighter
Braun.
The five stayed through the liight,
returning to the Village just beforetix the
next morning. '-' .•
F^eeporter Robert Duignari, a Nassau
• County police detective, w=as investigating
a burglary when the call came in on'
the police scanner at 9:40 p.m..
• "Every detecth-e in the coujity was
sent- there, more than 50," hi said,
Because of the intense traffic tie-ups, he
had torwalk several miles and did jiot
reach the scene until I Ip.m.
"The detectivels job is to cordon off
the scene and search the area. We were
there until three or four in the motnini;._:
helpuigidentify and tag the deceased," he
, recalled. "There were so many survivors ;
being worked on it looked likea MASH
unit." ' . . . ,
A police sergeant at the scene had sent
for 30 Spanish speaking officers, many
of whom were off-duty and came from
