Freeporters arrested in gang murder

Jose Angel White, a 14-year-old student at Dodd Junior High School in Freeport, was riding his bicycle home on September 23,2001, when he was shot to death in Roosevelt because he wore the wrong color shirt.
Jaime Figueroa, a 18-year-old man who came to Freeport to shoot pool, was gunned down in a drive-by shooting on February 23, 2003 because he was mistaken for a member of the gang known as La Mara Salvatrucha or MS-13.
Anthony Battaglia was murdered in a robbery gone awry.outside his home on September 19,2003 ih.Lynbrook alleged-: ly by four Freeport members of the Latin Kings and their associate.
All were innocent victims of gang violence.
But in a coordinated effort involving federal, state and local law enforcement agencies, including the Long Island Gang
Task Force, the Nassau County Police and the Freeport Police Department, more than 30 arrests have been made.
In one initiative called Operation Streetsweeper, over 30 members of violent street gangs were arrested February'4,
and charged with murder, firebombing, numerous assaults and robberies, said federal and local authorities. Later that same day, the Nassau County Police homicide squad arrested five people from Freeport, four men'known as members of the Latin Kings and one woman, who is a known• associate and'charged with Murder in the first and second degree as well as attempted Robbery in the first degree^
According to the United States Attorney's office, Laval Farmer, a member of the Bloods, is responsible for the murder of Jose Angel White. The murder was retaliation for an assault against a Bloods member that was believed to be

done by a member of the Crips, a rival street gang. The suspect mistakenly believed that Jose White was a member of the Crips because he was wearing blue, the color often worn by the Crips.
The Bloods is an African-American street gang that first appeared on the East Coast in the 1990s according to the United States Department of Justice. At least two Blood chapters or "sets" have a substantial presence on Long Island, including the Velt Gangsta Lanes (VGL) located in Roosevelt and the Nine Trey Gangstas in Hempstead. Advancement in the Bloods is achieved by having "status" among the membership, which is most often attained by "putting in work," an expression used to signify violent acts or other criminal activity. As part of initiation to membership prospective members are required to slash or cut an inno-. cent pedestrian, or they can be "beaten in," meaning they have withstood a beating
from members or "blessed in," meaning a current member has vouched for the individual, declaring the person has already committed a violent crime.
Laval Farmer faces a maximum sentence of life imprisonment or death, based upon his alleged participation in the Jose White murder.
Johnny A. Rodas and Mario Jimenez are charged with the murder of Jaime Figueora. The investigation revealed that while traveling in a car driven by Mario Jimenez, Johnny Rodas allegedly fired several rounds into a car being driven by Jaime Figueroa, killing him and injuring another passenger. According to the United States Attorney's Office, Johnny Rodas.and Mario Jimenez said that Mr. Figueora was murdered because they believed him to be a member of the Salvado-rans With Pride.- Mr. Rodas and
