The - Freeport Arrows Midget Hockey Team has captured the Long Island hockey championship. .The team completed an undefeated regular season with a pair of victories last weekend in the playoffs to take home the championship trophy. This marks back-to-back seasons for the Midgets, coming in first. The next stop for these boys is a trip up to Buffalo for the state championships.
This year's team is made up of a solid group of hard workers who have learned to forgo individual records for team goals. The Arrows play strong team defense. They shut down the Long Island Edge and the Dix Hills Rebels this weekend; Solid Goaltending from Matt Gertler and Tat Mionne have been the backbone of the team.
The defense is a gifted crew, who keep the opponents' shots way down. John Barker has been the leader of the defense. They all have a special quality that makes for a strong unit. Robert Gill is as quick a skater as you will find and as tough as they come also. Josh Powers has great hands as well as smooth skating ability.
Mark Callei leads Long Island in blocked shots, and moves the puck very well. Chris Noeth has grit and brings a real blue collar work ethic to the crew^ Matt Yee is considered one of the smartest players on the Island and plays with a steadiness rarely found at this level.
The forwards are an excellent blend of talent. Veteran Gary Knott is a hard working skater who never backs down. Max Kostenblatt is a "heady" player who is dynamite on face-offs as well as being tough down low. John Hogan is a proven shooter who can also get under the other team's skin.
Mike Greenberg is the power forward of the team who displays toughness and courage game in and game out. John Colan is a very talented player who has great hands and a good scorer's touch. Suren Grigoryan is a superb skater with more moves than you can count. Matt Klien is one of the hardest workers in the league; he has developed a strong shot and has been a big goal-scorer all season.
The "Freeport Connection Line" has been playing together forever it seems. Line mates J.R. Berotti, Nick
Garcia and Steven Kelly have a yery special chemistry that has not been matched. They like to "cycle" the puck and work the opposition 'till the right shot develops. This trio can play at a very high level.
"The great thing about our team is that any one of us can step up and make the big play that's needed," Steven Kelly recently said." In years past the team would rely on two or three guys to "carry us,, now we all carry the load equally
Coaches Chris and Nick Hogan, alorig with lifetime Arrow member Steve Gertler, have worked very hard with this group of young men. Freeport and Long Island can be extremely proud of the Arrows.
The team will be trucking up to Buffalo with a real good shot at capturing the title. For most of the team this is their last year of youth hockey before heading off to college. They have all brought us some great memories and it has been a pleasure to watch these little boys grow to fine young men through the Arrows Organization.
