ROSEMARY MCKAY with husband Kevin and children Courtney and Ryan.
by Kevin McKay
Rosemary is truly honored that her two children Ttook the time to nominate her for Mother of the Year. She has been blessed with two lovely children. Courtney, a senior at Holy Trinity High School and Ryan, a seventh-grader at St. Christopher's School in Baldwin.
Even with her busy schedule, Rosemary manages to be very involved in both of her children's education and after-school events. A supportive pat on the back and a shoulder to lean on means a lot to molding a child's character and setting them off on the right step.
Rosemary has been married to her husband Kevin for the past 24 years. She is a lifelong resident of Freeport and daughter of Vito and Mary Alagna. Rosemary is a Special Education teacher in the North Bellmore School District and teaches Graduate courses in special education at Adelphi University and C.W. Post.
By Ryan McKay
I think my mother should be Mother of the Year because she is always helping our family non-stop. She supports her kids 100% with our talents and our choices. Like whenever I have a drawing she tells me how she likes it. She is full of surprises and loves to change the furniture around.
Whenever I have to go somewhere she will drive me. When I have a soccer game she will come and .support me and cheer for my team even if we lose. She helps me with "my home "work and teaches me new things. She always has something nice to say and is reasonable. She is smart and funny and is active! . ,
She brings home movies and loves gardening. She helps me take care of two cats and a lot of fish! She is also a good teacher with three jobs even though she can't be in three places at once! I love coming to her school and seeing the children. She is also good with my friends. These are just a few reasons why I think my mother should he Mother oftbeYear.
Rosemary McKay of Van Buren Avenue has been named Leader's Mother of the Year for 2004. Here is the winning letter, submittedito The Leader by her children Courtney and Ryan:
Talented, giving, loyal, humorous, appreciative, encouraging, confident, intelligent, comforting, and family-oriented. This is only a compounded list of the qualities of a mother at her best.
In fact, our mother, Rosemary McKay, possesses all of the prior traits. While she has a busy schedule teaching at an elementary school during the day and two undergraduate college courses at night, she smoothly makes the transition from teaching in the classroom to teaching in the home.
She is always there to listen to our stories, help resolve a problem, or just to take a walk and wind down from a hectic day. We are not ashamed to admit that we consider our mother to be our best friend. She is not only present at all of the family activities and sporting events, she is the loudest and most supportive spectator. One day of acknowledgement is not enough for this mother, she deserves an entire year!
The contest winner will receive the following prizes: A $25 gift certificate from Fiore Brothers; a gift certificate for a bottle of champagne from Atlantic Bayview Wines; a gift certificate from June Peters; a luncheon for two at The Schooner; a free haircut from Salon Atlantique; a $25 gift certificate from Rachel's Waterside Grill; and a year's subscription to the Freeport Baldwin Leader
Po\»^er Plant 2 Up and Running
by Laura Schofer
Construction of Power Plant 2 in Freeport is complete. The new 47 megawatt combustion turbine project began operation on April 1. Freeport Electric confirmed that the plant is now fully operational.
The village has also announced that the old diesel units at Power Plant #2 were disconnected from the distribution system, "effectively decommissioning Units 1 and 2," reads a press release issued by Freeport Electric.
Within the next two-to-three weeks the old stacks will be removed. Freeport Electric is in the process of developing an advertisement to sell the diesels, either whole or in parts.
In November Erin D. Crotty, commissioner of the Department of Environmental Conservation, ordered Freeport Electric to shut-down their diesel generators at Power Plant 2 by January 31 of this year because the generators were unable to meet federal standards for nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions, a precursor of smog and particulate matter.
Freeport Electric responded by petitioning the New York State Supreme Court to vacate and annul the November 25 decision to shut down the diesel generators at Power Plant 2. The appeal has been withdrawn.
The diesel generators at Power Plant 2 were last used on February 27 when there was a one-hour blackout in Freeport caused by a Long Island Power Authority tripped breaker. The diesels at Power Plant 2 were turned on at 9:42 a.m. and went off line around 11:04 a.m. that morning. These two diesels were also activated during the August 14, 2003 Northeast blackout.
