MEADOW STUDENTS in "A Song of Peace. "
The Baldwin School District observed the birthday of Dr Martin Luther King, Jr„ at the 23rd annual program at the high school on January 17. The theme for this year was "Honoring Dr. King's Dream: We Will Not Turn Around."
Sponsored jointly by the Concerned Parents of Baldwin and the Baldwin School District, the program reflected the many talents of the Baldwin community. Students Brandon Gibbons and Daniela Brown were the master and mistress of ceremonies. The high school jazz ensemble serenaded the audience with "One on One." The middle school drama club reenacted the historic milestones of the civil rights movement. And the Step Club performed a composition called "Unity," while elementary'students sang songs of peace, including "You Can Be Like Martin" and "What a Wonderful World." Posters from the Martin
Luther King, Jr., poster contest were on display in the cafeteria for the evening and can be viewed at the district office through February.
Senior high school students Daniela Brown, Charmaine Cole, and Ogheneruemu Oyibohoro were presented with the Martin Luther King Humanitarian Award for their commitment to community service. In addition, middle schooler Camille Grant was selected to receive the award, the first time a middle school student has had this honor.
At the end of the program, members of the audience held hands and sang "We Shall Overcome." Dr. Kathy Weiss, Superintendent of Schools, thanked the students, teachers, and parents who worked so hard to put on the show, adding, "It is thanks to the Concerned Parents'of Baldwin that every year the memory of Dr. King stays alive in our hearts and minds.
