Freeport's MS-13 leader arrested
by Laura Schofer
Charges against 17 leaders of La Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13), including Angel Diaz, the alleged leader of the Freeport "clique," were filed in Federal court on October 12.
Roslynn R. Mauskopf, United States attorney for the Eastern District of New York and Pasquale J. D'Amuro, assistant director in charge. Federal Bureau of Investigation, announced that Mr. Diaz, known by his street name as "Dehnquenta," was charged with conspiracy to assault and possession of firearms in furtherance of that conspiracy.
According to the complaint, authorities secretly recorded meetings at which Mr. Diaz, along with other MS-13 members, plotted to shoot rival gang members and murder Genaro Venegas and Olivia Mendoza, who MS-13 leaders believed were providing information to law enforcement authorities.
The five MS-13 members charged with the alleged murders are Wilver R. Lopez, also known as "Conde," Edgardo Noel Salina-Galiano, also known as "Maldito," Edwin Enriquez, also known
as "Joker," Jose A. Hernandez, also known as "Estrario," and Jose Recinos, also known as "Psycho and "L'il Psycho." A sixth man, Jovanic A. Berrios, also known as "Sonic" and "Sony," is still being sought by authorities. None of these six men are from Freeport. •
The charges and arrests are the product .of ongoing investigations by the FBI's Long Island Gang Task Force compromised of members of the FBI, New York State Police, Nassau County Police Department, Freeport Police, Hempstead Village Police, Nassau County Department of Corrections, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Port Washington Police, and Suffolk County Police department.
"This is a major setback for this gang," Michael Woodward, Freeport police chief, told The Leader. "These arrests will help other individuals understand the seriousness of these crimes. They have been federally charged and are facing life imprisonment; a few are even facing the death penalty." Chief Woodward added that "this effort took out a lot of heads of. the MS-13 chapters, but they will be replaced."
The Freeport Police Department has one full-time detective assigned to the FBI's gang task force. "It's just one of the things we do to deter crime," said Chief Woodward, who added that there are a number programs to quell the gang prob-lern in Freeport.
A few of these programs include the Adopt-a-cop program, home visits and awareness prevention programs in the schools. Recently the police department hired a social worker to help address this issue. The Freeport Police Department are also members of the Officials Working Group and Helping End Violence Now (HEVN), both organizations dedicated to combatting gang violence.
