Preserves bring back wildlife to Brookslde Preserve
by Christine Marzigliano
Throughout the spring and fall, I spend many weekends as a volunteer removing trash from our pristine preserves. This past weekend, the South Shore Audubon Society, together with volunteers from the Freeport JQwanis Club, spent a few hours at Brookside Preserve in Freeport and Baldwin.
As we exited the preserve and dis-cussed'the importance of maintaining it, a red-tailed hawk swooped down just inside the preserve and caught his prey, a field mouse.
This was a full-sized adult hawk (about 20 inches long) with a wing span
of four to five feet. He spent a few moments killing his prey and then walked off down the trail into the preserve. This is the second sighting I have had of a red-tailed hawk, the last one being just north of Forest City Park along the Southern State Parkway in Wantagh last year.
As an environmentalist, I have been passionate in trying to save our preserves and to keep them absolutely intact. Sighting this red-tailed hawk was a wonderful treat and served to reinforce my belief that we can save the wildlife that remains in Nassau County if we preserve open space and keep our preserves safe from all intrusions.

Remember those who gave all
It was not long after Andre and Zachary Fletcher moved into the Village of Freeport in 1987 that they joined the Freeport Fire Department. The IS-year-»old twin brothers were eager to become a part of their new community after coming here with their family from Brooklyn.
Eyentually, the brothers also joined the New York City Fire Department. Andre was assigned to Rescue Company No. 5 on Staten Island, while Zachary became a member of Ladder Company No. 132 in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn.
Andre's company was among the first called to the scene on September 11 when the two planes hit the World Trade Center. Andre's -body has never been found, something that haunts his^ brother to this day.
On October 2, in front of the Fletcher family home, village officials joined with
the family, and neighbors and friends, along with pohce and fire officials from several departments, including the Freeport Fire Department, and the New York City Fire Department and Police Department, to honor Andre Fletcher's memory by renaming New York Avenue "F.M. Andre Fletcher Way."
At the ceremony Zachary Fletcher said, "It is difficult to describe the feehng of losing a twin brother. I had problems believing he was really gone. Having these signs up, where I see them every day, has helped me come to terms with his death. I deeply appreciate the village's efforts on behalf of my family."
Andre had trained as an Emergency Medical Technician, and also served as a hazardous materials responder with the New York City Fire Department. He was promoted to the rank of Fire Marshal posthumously.
