CO2 emergency on Buffalo Avenue
by Jack Healy
A flash freezer at Round House Foods, 248 Buffalo Avenue, Freeport, caused the release of carbon dioxide (CO2) last week. The plant which had approximately 40 workers in the area of the release, had to' be evacuated after a number of workers complained of problems in breathing.
CO2 can displace air to the point where there is not enough oxygen to breath. It is slightly heavier than air and may accumulate in low areas, posing a confined space hazard.
First emergency units on the scene were from Freeport's Emergency Management Team, followed by the Freeport Fire Department and units from the Nassau County police and ambulances. Fire Marshal's hazardous material units and police Emergency Service Unit. Additional ambulances were also requested to the scene from the Baldwin, Merrick, North Merrick, Bellmore and Point Lookout/Lido Fire Departments.
A triage area was set up so that those affected by the gas could be evaluated and transported to local hospitals'if needed. Thirty victims were evaluated and four were transported by fire department ambulances to local hospitals.
