From Freeport to New Orl
SOME OF THE CSEA MEMBERS who work for the Village of Freeport, and came together to help their coworker Tara Sims (seated, in center). Her family in New Orleans lost everything in the wake of Katrina.
Tara Sims, an account clerk in the village's water department, watched and waited anxiously to see where Katrina would, hit. Most of her family on her mother's side lived in the Ninth Ward of New Orleans - which is now under, many feet of water.
11 were evacuated to safety, some to Baton Rouge, but mostly to Texas. Her five cousins and her 85-year-old great-aunt are missing.
. "It's been very stressful, looking for them- and trying to find out if they're okay. No one knows if they left and made it to a shelter somewhere, or if they are even still alive," she said. "And the ones that did leave are struggling so hard to make it every day," said Tara Sims. -
In the immediate aftermath of Katrina, her family took refuge like many others at the Superdqme, taking only the clothes on their backs because they expected to come home right away. But their homes were completely flooded out in one of New Orleans' hardest hit areas.
Tara's family in New York pulled some money together and sent it down, but they couldn't afford a whole lot.
With that knowledge, Tara's co-worker and friend, Louphenia Jones, suggested she write a note telling of her family's plight. Tara gave the letter to Lou, who sent it around and posted it in the lunchroom.
In just a few days, Tara's coworkers in the village governments, from all different departments, had pulled together and raised about $2,000}; to help her stranded family to help getjl back on their feet.
"I met her cousin when she was here a'-] couple of years ago. She's such a lovely person, and would give anything she had to give if she knew somebody needed it," said Lou Jones. "So I just thought -why not help somebody in this, situation who I knew who really needed it?"
A couple of days later, the money was l wired to Tara's family. The cousins in-Texas were able to use the donation to, get a decent apartment, and their mom is^ working in the first part-time job she-could get. But Tara says, at least now,' they have some hope, even though they have no idea when - or if - they will ever be able to return to New Orleans.
"FEMA keeps saying they have to wait for their home to be assessed before they can help," she said. But their homes are still inaccessible, so no one knows how long that will take.
"Oh, my gosh! I was just so overwhelmed at everyone's response to my letter!" she said. "We just want to thank everybody so much for their generosity. My cousin said she didn't know what they would have done without all of our help. And all I can say is, 'Thank you!'" she said. -(continued on page 2)
