Residents of Freeport will find their commute a bit smoother with the reconstruction of Guy Lombardo Avenue. On Friday, October 28, Freeport Mayor William Glacken along with County Executive Thomas Suozzi and county Legislator David Denenberg, led a groundbreaking ceremony at the comer of Guy Lombardo and East Avenue in Freeport at the site of William J. Martin Park.
The project is the result of a cooperative effort between the county and the village of Freeport and includes the complete rehabilitation of the roadway's surface, as well as improved drainage to minimize flooding and new curbs and sidewalks.
The area between Sunrise Highway and Merrick Road will also include the installation of brick sidewalks, antique lighting, benches, bus shelters and curb--side trees.
Nassau County is providing $6.5 million to rebuild this major north-south
connector from Sunrise Highway to Atlantic Avenue. The money came from the county's Capital Improvement Program. The village will oversee the construction and accept ownership of the road upon completion. The Village will also be responsible for the future maintenance of the road.
The project has been in the planning stage since 1999. Under the agreement between the two municipalities, the village provided the engineering work required to complete the design of the project. The village Department of Public Works will also provide project management, contract administration and inspection services to the county.
The village will also coordinate the work with KeySpan, which will install new gas mains, and the Freeport Electric Utility, which will move the overhead wires underground between Sunrise Highway and Merrick Road. The village is also working with the Freeport Water Department, the Nassau County Traffic office, Cablevision and Verizon to arrange
A VITAL ROLE IN THE PROJECT will be played by Freepor^ Superintendent of Public Works Lou DiGrazia, center,
the installation of all connecting cable and conduits during the construction work.
According to a press release from the mayor's office, the village and county will keep local businesses and residents along Guy Lombardo Avenue, as well the Dodd Middle School, informed on the progress of the project to ensure that there will be as few disruptions during the reconstruction period as possible.
"This unique partnership," said Mayor Glacken in closing, "is an example of inter-municipal cooperation between Freeport and Nassau County to accomplish an important public objective, and this project is a major step forward in our downtown revitalization efforts."
