By Joan Delaney
At the mandated annual reorganiza-tional meeting on July 5, members of Baldwin's Board of Education elected Mary Jo O'Hagan to be their president for the 2006/07 school year and former President James Scannell to serve as vice-president.
Mrs. O'Hagan noted Mr. Scannell's service as president saying, "His extraordinary leadership of the board for four years has been a special and gratifying experience for the community." She asked that people "be generous and patient with me,", adding, "I am not Mr. Scannell but I will do the best I possibly can."
Mr. Scannell-expressed his "thanks for the privilege and honor to serve," adding that when he attends school board conventions, he is particularly aware of "how well this board works with each other."
The two-part meeting focused initially
on numerous mandated annual appointments and assignments for the board, for certain district staff, and for outside professional services. While most were pro-formal, the separation of auditing responsibilities followed new state requirements.
This will result in the district having three outside auditing firms - an independent auditor responsible for the overall annual audit as well as a separate internal auditor and claims auditor. Only the annual appointment of R.S. Abrams, the claims auditor, who formerly served as the "internal claims auditor" was approved at this meeting.
During the business portion of the meeting, several outside consultants were approved for professional development training. They . include: Learner Centered Initiative, Empowering Writers, LLC, and Dr. Frank Gardella for math professional development training. Board member Mary Clark asked if
eventually this training could be provided by district staff, and Superintendent Robert Britto said that some could but some included "tightly held" materials and approaches which are copywrited.
A contract was also approved with Leaders for Tomorrow-Dempsey Associates, Inc. to provide strategic planning consultant work for the 2006/07 school year. A variety of consultants for services for special education children and their families were also approved as were numerous business contracts, some of which are for work involved in Phase II of capital improvements approved by voters in the most recent bond.
The board also approved, with thanks.
I
a donation of $7,500 from the Baldwin Foundation for Education (BFE) which reflect two maxigrants - one of $6,750 for "Math Classrooms," as proposed by Michael Roccoforte, assistant superintendent for instruction, and another for $1,000 for a proposal called "Smart Board," initiated by teacher Laurie Buckley.
The BFE is a non-profit organization begun in 1993 to provide support to Baldwin's schools and to sustain Baldwin's tradition of excellence. The organization provides financial support to enhance and enrich the educational program through mini and maxi grants as well as scholarships to deserving students. (continued on page 8)
