Jazz on the Nautical Mile

By Joan Delaney
Incumbent sanitation commissioner Leroy Roberts handily won another five-year term" on Sanitary District Number Two's Board of Commissioners with 831 votes. Challenger Wilhelmena
Funderburke received 350 votes.
The sanitary district encompasses the communities of Baldwin, South Hempstead and Roosevelt. Mr. Roberts, who resides in Baldwin, received 767 votes from Baldwin, 48 votes from South Hempstead and 16 votes from Roosevelt. Ms. Funderburke, a Roosevelt resident, received 119 votes in Baldwin, 64 votes in South Hempstead' :and-" 167 votes' - in Roosevelt.
While campaigning and publicity concerning the election were somewhat low-key, both candidates did work to turn out their constituents. Mr. Roberts' friends mailed postcards, reminding residents to vote and they made phone calls on the day and evening of the vote^ Ms.
Funderburke's supporters distributed flyers and were at the LIRR station on the evening of the vote, handing out cold bottles of water on the scorching hot day, along with reminder postcards urging commuters to vote on their way home. She ran on a platform of lowering taxes, while Mr. Roberts ran on a platform of experience along with plans to enhance the recycling process.
The elimination of special districts like Sanitary District Number Two has been the hallmark of cost-cutting suggestions by County Assessor Harvey Levinson. Thus far, however, residents of the sanitary dis- . trict seem to support the present structure. They returned Mr. Roberts to office this year and re-elected Commissioner Jerry Brown rather than last year's challenger Laura Mallay, with whom Mr. Levinson campaigned. Mr. Levinson was also defeated in his race for town supervisor during which he also focused on the elimination of special districts.
