Baldwin Superintendent assures community of scliool safety
Statement read by Dr. Robert J. Britto, superintendent of schools, Baldwin School District, at October 11 Board of Education meeting:
In light of the recent incidents of school violence across the country, I want to assure the Baldwin community that the Baldwin School District places the safety of its students and staff as its first priority.
For many years, Baldwin School District has had a districtwide emergency management plan that detailspro-cedures and the chain of cbinmarid for specific types of emergencies;- We review the emergency management plan at the district and school levels and hold staff training and school drills every year.
In addition, the Baldwin School District has been in the forefront of school safety by holding annual School Proper Emergency Evacuation Drills (we call SPEED drills) to test potential
emergency scenarios in cooperation with the fire and police departments.
Baldwin School District works closely with the Baldwin Fire Department and the Nassau County Police Department on all matters relating to school safety, with two Nassau County police officers specifically assigned to our district as school resource officers.
We ask students and the community to report any suspicious activity to school administrators or anonymously through www.report-it.com or directly to Nassau County Police by calling 911. The district has hired Arrow Security to patrol the district buildings after school hours, and the community may report any safety concerns to the company at 631-207-1450.
In the event of an emergency, it is important for us to communicate with parents and guardians, so please check that student emergency contact forms are completely updated and do so on a
regular basis. Parents and guardians are also strongly encouraged to subscribe to the "safety alert" e-mail list to receive prompt notification by e-mail of any emergency situation happening within the district. This information will be posted on the home page of the district website, www.baldwinschools.org, as well.
Violence toward students is both disconcerting and disheartening. We all want our schools to be a safe haven for children. Although we hope the Baldwin School District will never be touched by any act of violence, we cannot be complacent. We have reviewed safety procedures with our staff, increased screening procedures for visitors to our buildings, and continue to be vigilant and proactive so the students and staff in the Baldwin schools feel safe and secure.
